Falcons Come Up Short to Condors
November 9, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â After three meetings this season, the Fresno Falcons still can't solve the Bakersfield Condors as the Falcons fell to the Condors, 2-1, Friday night at Selland Arena. For the Falcons, it was their third straight loss to their Highway 99 rivals and they have now dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
The first period saw the two teams exchange goals within a span of two minutes. Scott Borders put the Falcons on top first with his power play goal at the 12:34 mark for his second tally of the season. David Bell knotted things up for the Condors two minutes later when put in his first goal of the season.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the second period, Jamie Cooke gave the Condors the lead at the midway point of the hockey game when he fired home his fourth goal of the season. Cooke's goal would prove to be the game winner, as the Falcons went scoreless over the final 40 minutes of the hockey game. Falcons goaltender Terry Friesen gave his team a fighting, stopping 19 shots in the third period, but it still wouldn't be enough to keep the Falcons out of the loss column.
The Falcons special teams shined once again as they stopped all six of the Condors power play opportunities while converting on one of their four chances. Friesen made 31 saves for the Falcons between the pipes.
The loss drops the club's record to a mere one game above .500 at 5-4-0, with 10 points. They remain tied for third place in the West Coast Hockey League standings with idle Long Beach Ice Dogs. Both teams trail the San Diego Gulls by one point for second place in the standings.
These two teams will return to the ice tomorrow night for a 7:30 p.m. rematch. The game will feature a pregame ceremony to honor the retirement of all-time Falcon great Greg Spenrath. Spenrath's #27 will be hoisted to the rafters of Selland Arena while the first 2,000 fans at Saturday night's game will receive a free Spenrath bobblehead courtesy of AT& T Wireless. Tickets are still available at the Selland Arena box office, all Ticketmaster locations, or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.
