November 9, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

Rookie Andrew Ianiero scored a goal on his first shot of the season and also added two assists, while winger Torrey DiRoberto scored a pair of goals as the Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team (4-6-2) defeated the Northeast Division's Reading Royals 4-1 Friday night in East Coast Hockey League play at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Bombers are 3-0-2 in their last five games.

Ianiero, who was activated from the 30-day injured reserve earlier in the day, scored his first professional goal just 7:35 into the first period, taking a drop pass from Ryan Vince and wristing a high shot past Royals' goalie Scott Fankhouser. Ben Knopp also assisted on the goal to notch his first professional point.

DiRoberto helped the Bombers add to their lead 13:17 into the second period, converting down low in a three-way passing play involving Vince and Ianiero. Rookie defenseman Tyler Sloan recorded his first professional goal on the power play at 18:44, sending an Ianiero centering pass past Fankhouser. Knopp also added a helper on the score.

Brian McCullough put Reading on the board with a rebound goal at 7:14 of the third period, but the Bombers put the game out of reach at 19:47 when DiRoberto sent the puck from behind the defensive blueline into the center of the Reading net for a short-handed, unassisted, empty net goal. DiRoberto has four goals in the last three Bombers games.

First-year goalie Shane Bendera, who is unbeaten during regulation in his last three starts (2-0-1), made 29 saves to record the win (3-2-1) for the Bombers. The team finished 1 for 6 with the man advantage and finished a perfect 7 for 7 on the penalty kill against the league's best home power play unit.

The Bombers will continue a string of five straight road games with the fourth installment on Saturday at Atlantic City against the Boardwalk Bullies (7:05 p.m./6:50 p.m. broadcast time on www.daytonbombers.com in association with www.sportsjuice.com). Last season, the Bombers enjoyed a fine rivalry with this South New Jersey team, culminating in the Dayton Bombers' 3-1 Northern Conference Final series win over the Boardwalk Bullies that lifted the Bombers to a Kelly Cup Finals appearance. During the regular season, the Bombers were 1-2 against Atlantic City, splitting a pair of meetings at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Karl Goehring recorded his first professional regular season shutout on November 7 with a 3-0, 37-save win. The Bombers play Atlantic City four more times during the regular season, all in December, two at the Nutter Center and two at Boardwalk Hall.

The Bombers' next home game is Friday, November 15, 2002 vs. Wheeling (7:30 p.m.) at the Nutter Center. Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company will be presenting "Who's Got the Real Diamond?"
