St. Paul Saints News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Paul Saints have known all too well the heartache of extra innings. Everything from being walked off to having the bases loaded with nobody out and not being able to score. They lost their first three extra innings games on the season, but on Saturday night at Huntington Park they made sure to get the job done. The Saints scored three in the 10th inning and defeated the Columbus Clippers 6-4 to snap their three-game losing streak.
With the game tied at three in the 10th, and Brent Rooker the runner at second, Willians Astudillo hit a little tapper to the left side that pitcher DJ Johnson went to play and slipped as Astudillo reached on the error with Rooker going to third. Johnson was removed for Daniel Young. Astudillo stole second to put runners at second and third. With one out, Jimmy Kerrigan was intentionally walked to load the bases. JT Riddle gave the Saints a 4-3 lead with an RBI groundout to second. Roberto Peña gave the Saints a 6-3 lead with a two-run single to center.
That was more than enough for the Saints as Oscar Mercado's sacrifice fly scored Tyler Krieger. With two outs Andrew Gimenez singled, but Nick Vincent fanned pinch hitter Nolan Jones to end the game.
The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run homer from Kerrigan, his fifth of the season.
Meanwhile, Saints starter Bryan Sammons didn't give up his first hit until there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, Sammons gave up his lone run of the night when Krieger reached on an infield single, moved to second on a walk to Connor Marabell, and advanced to third on Mercado's sacrifice bunt. Gimenez' sacrifice fly scored Krieger, but Kerrigan gunned out Marabell trying to go to third. Sammons went 5.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking four and striking out three.
The Saints took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on Mark Contreras' solo homer to right, his fourth of the season. Contreras finished the night 3-5 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored.
The Clippers tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run homer by Gabriel Arias, his fifth of the season, off reliever Kyle Barraclough. It ended a streak of 18.0 consecutive scoreless innings by the bullpen.
Andrew Vasquez earned the victory by tossing 2.1 perfect innings of relief and striking out two.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. central. The Saints send RHP Chandler Shepherd (3-2, 6.16) to the mound against Clippers RHP Kevin Herget (1-3, 7.43). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
