Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers scored their first victory of the season on Saturday night, when Seth Granger belted a single to right field that scored Daniel Bowman, giving the Crushers a 2-1 victory in 12 innings over the Gateway Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium.
For the second night in a row, the pitching was fantastic, and runs were very tough to come by. Both starting pitchers threw extremely well, and the bullpen for both teams also performed well.
Lake Erie (1-1) starting pitcher Matt Rein was outstanding, throwing seven scoreless innings, and allowed just four hits while fanning seven in the process. The combination of Matt Smith, Brad Duffy and Dave Middendorf (1-0) combined to toss five innings of solid relief, allowing just a run on six hits.
The Crushers scored first, snapping a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Guantlett Eldemire started the inning with a double, made his way to third on Ricardo Lizcano's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Andrew Davis's sacrifice fly.
The Grizzlies (1-1) tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Jose Flores started the inning with a base hit, and scored the game tying run on Jet Butler's double to the gap in left center field.
Both teams had chances to score in extra innings. In the 11th inning, Flores reached on an infield single and made his way to third Landon Hernandez's double down the right field line. With runners on second and third and one out, Butler hit a fly ball to left field. Lizcano made the catch, and Flores was thrown out at home plate trying to tag up.
Lake Erie left the bases loaded in the 11th inning, before cashing in with the walk off hit in the 12th. Daniel Bowman smashed a one out double down the right field line, before the Emmanuel Quilles was intentionally walked. The next batter, Granger, stroked a single to right field. The ball bounced off of Jon Myers and ricocheted into right center, bringing Bowman home in the process.
Middendorf scored the victory after allowing just a base hit in a scoreless inning of relief, while Dan Eaton (0-1) suffered the loss, after allowing the game winning run in the 12th inning.
The last half of the order did most of the damage for the Crushers. Batters 5-9 combined to record 10 of Lake Erie's 11 hits. Bowman led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, while Quilles, Granger, and J.C. Figueroa all hit safely twice.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Grizzlies at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening. The Crushers will start right hander Alex Kaminsky, and the Grizzlies will counter with lefty Gregg Downing. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
