Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but were unable to climb the mountain the rest of the way, as the Beach Bums fell to the Joliet Slammers 6-3 on Saturday night.
Trailing 6-1 heading into the seventh, Traverse City started their comeback effort with a pinch-hit single from Taylor Wrenn. Two batters later, Ryan Still walked to put runners on first and second. Andrew Cohn stepped to the dish and with two strikes, grounded a ball through the right side for a hit, scoring Wrenn and making it 6-2.
In the eighth, Chase Burch led off with a walk and two batters later, moved to second on a Sean Gusrang single. Following a pop-up for the second out of the inning, Wrenn came up and lined a single to center to score Burch to cut the Slammers lead to 6-3.
The Beach Bums gave themselves a chance in the ninth as Still led off with an infield single and Cohn shot a ball through the left side to bring the tying run to the plate. Jose Vargas swung at the first pitch and bounced a ball to second for a double play before Burch popped out to first to end the game.
Chuck Lofgren (1-0) pitched effectively for 6.2 innings, scattering five hits, allowing two runs while both walking and striking out four. Justin Erasmus worked his way in and out of trouble in the ninth for the save. Johnny Omahen (0-1) took the loss for Traverse City.
For the second straight night, the Beach Bums tallied the first run of the game as with two outs in the first, Vargas singled followed by a Burch double to deep center to make it 1-0. Joliet would respond with three in the second, two in the third, and one in the fifth to build a 6-1 lead.
The bullpen was once again strong for TC as the quartet of Mike Devine, Burny Mitchem, Matt Miller, and Nick Capito authored 3.1 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.
On the offensive side, Burch had three hits with an RBI and a run while Cohn and Wrenn each had two hits and an RBI.
The series wraps up tomorrow at 3:05 pm EDT as right-hander Scott Dunn gets the start for the Beach Bums against Brett Zawacki for Joliet. Traverse City returns to Northern Michigan for the Home Opener against Evansville on Tuesday at 7:05 pm.
