Evansville, IN - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used two big early innings to defeat the Evansville Otters 8-3 on Saturday night at Bosse Field. The CornBelters will play their first regular season home game of the 2013 season at The Corn Crib on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. versus the Windy City Thunderbolts (*CEFCU Opening Night*).
The CornBelters opened the scoring in the second inning with four hits with two outs. Matt Wright and Santiago Chirino singled followed by a Devin Thaut base hit that scored Wright and a two-run double off the left field wall by Keoni Manago.
The Belters added to the tally in the third inning when Pat McKenna led off with a walk followed by a base hit by Steven Felix. Romulo Ruiz doubled inside the third base bag to score McKenna, and Felix came home on a ground out by Matt Wright to put the Belters ahead 5-0 in the third inning.
The Otters dented the scoreboard in the third inning on a solo home run over the 385-foot sign in left center by C.J. Henry to cut the CornBelters lead to 5-1.
Evansville cut the margin to 5-2 with a two-out RBI double to the right field wall by Andrew Clark, scoring Frank Martinez who reached via walk.
The CornBelters added insurance in the ninth when Manago led off with a walk followed by a fielder's choice by Mike Schwartz to put runners at first and second. Pat McKenna sacrificed the runners to second and third, and both scored on a single to right by Steven Felix. After two wild pitches put Felix at third, pinch hitter David Medina drove him home for the final Normal tally. The Otters added a run in the ninth when John Nester led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch and two fielder's choices.
Jose Trinidad earned the win in his CornBelters debut with 6 2/3 innings of work. Mitch Mormann pitched the remaining 2 1/3 innings for the save. Otters starter Matt Crim took the loss.
The CornBelters (2-0) conclude the opening series in Evansville on Sunday with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch with a 4:50 p.m. pre-game on http://ww.995theticket.com. The Belters will send lefty Ryan Demmin to the mound while the Otters will counter with lefty Matt Zielinski.
