Round Rock Express News Release
DES MOINES - Express skipper Jackie Moore hoped for a quick end to a suspended game on Saturday at Principal Park. Cold, snowy weather in late April forced the suspension of a 1-1 tie between his club and Iowa after six innings.
The skipper didn't get his wish, though, as the two teams needed seven additional innings to settle the suspended game on another cool Iowa evening.
Charlton Jimerson belted a home run to the top of a restaurant roof in left field in the 13th inning, and excellent relief work from David Lee, Mike Gallo, Bob Giron, Steve Kent and Travis Driskill led the way to a 2-1 Express win.
The second game, scheduled for nine innings, was shortened due to the length of the suspended game. Cubs lefty Rich Hill, who had struck out a total of 20 Round Rock hitters in his two previous starts against the Express, continued his domination by striking out nine in six innings of work to take a 2-1 decision over Jared Gothreaux.
Casey Kopitzke lined a two-run smash off third baseman Brooks Conrad's glove with one out in the second inning, giving Iowa and Hill all the ammunition they needed.
The Express scored its only run in the third on a two-out walk by Mike Rodriguez and a booming RBI double from Joe McEwing that cut the lead in half.
Round Rock missed a huge opportunity in the fifth, leaving two in scoring position. In the seventh, former Atlanta Braves reliever Kerry Lightenberg came on to pitch a one, two, three inning, notching his fifth save.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Principal Park as Ezequiel Astacio goes to the hill for Round Rock.
