Portland Beavers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ryan Meaux pitched four perfect innings and Aquilino Lopez and Cla Meredith finished out the game as the Portland Beavers won the second game of a doubleheader with the Sacramento River Cats Friday night at Raley Field. Sacramento won the first game 5-4 in extra innings.
The Portland pitching staff did not allow a single Sacramento base runner in the second game, only the seventh perfect game in the 104-year history of the Pacific Coast League. The win also snapped a six-game losing streak and an eight-game road-losing streak.
Jon Knott added his third RBI of the night in the bottom of the first of game two when he came to the plate with bases loaded. Knott grounded into a force-out with one down, which allowed Terrmel Sledge to score from third. A throwing error then allowed Paul McAnulty to score.
David Matranga doubled the Beavers' advantage in the second inning when he hit a two-run homer to left, scoring Manny Alexander and putting the Beavers up 4-0. Alexander added an RBI single in the sixth to finish the scoring.
Meaux's four perfect innings led off the game, with Lopez (3-1) adding two innings for the win and Meredith pitching the final frame to complete the perfect game. Kaz Tadano (0-2) allowed three earned runs over 4.2 innings to suffer the loss in the second game.
The first game was the third consecutive game that the Beavers have played extra innings.
The Beavers (31-30) took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh of game one, but Sacramento tied it on a two-run homer by Nathan Espy. After a scoreless eighth, Knott delivered a crucial pinch-hit single in the ninth with two outs, scoring Justin Leone and Jack Cust and giving the Beavers the 4-2 edge.
Sacramento (31-30) came back in the bottom of the ninth with singles from Mark Kiger and Jason Perry to lead off the inning. John Baker and Charles Thomas followed with RBI singles and Doug Clark logged the game-winning RBI with a single to left-center to seal the 5-4 victory.
Jim Brower (0-2), who took the loss in last night's extra-inning game, allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the loss in the first game. Ron Flores (4-1) came in and closed down the Beavers after Santiago Casilla gave up two runs in the top of the ninth to get the win.
The Beavers and the River Cats continue their series Saturday night at Raley Field at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Kennard Jones' RBI single in the third was his first hit for the Beavers this year ... the doubleheader was to make up for a game rained out on May 27 at PGE Park ... Junge retired 10 consecutive hitters over the third through sixth innings ... the Beavers are 2-5 in extra innings this season ... six of Matranga's seven home runs have come against Sacramento.
