PCL1 Round Rock Express

Express Split Doubleheader with Iowa Cubs

June 4, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

Roy Corcoran induced a game-ending double play from Bryan LaHair to convert his first save of the season as the Round Rock Express won the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Iowa Cubs 5-3 Thursday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (24-30) snapped a four-game losing streak in games against the I-Cubs (28-25) with the win. Iowa won the first game of the doubleheader 4-3.

Corcoran, who has been used as a middle reliever and a spot starter throughout the season, worked Thursday night as the closer after Casey Daigle was promoted to the Houston Astros earlier in the week. Corcoran allowed a leadoff single to Micah Hoffpauir in the bottom of the seventh. He rebounded with a full-count strikeout of Brad Snyder before LaHair bounced into the twin-killing.

That made a winner of Express starter Shane Loux (1-1), who allowed three runs on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Loux, who came off the disabled list one week ago, used just 54 pitches on the night in his third start of the season. Yorman Bazardo worked a perfect sixth inning, bridging the gap between Loux and Corcoran.

Chris Johnson staked the Express to an early lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. Hoffpauir opened the top of the second with a double and later scored on LaHair's RBI groundout, but Oswaldo Navarro answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to push Round Rock's lead back to three runs.

Iowa pulled to within one run in the top of the fifth; Snyder led off with a single, and LaHair followed with a two-run homer to right. However, the Express again answered. Yordany Ramirez walked to lead off the sixth and stole second. After Drew Locke's pinch-hit single pushed Ramirez to third, Jason Bourgeois legged out an RBI fielder's choice to score Ramirez and cap the scoring.

Bourgeois was 1-for-4 in each game of the doubleheader, pushing his hitting streak to 12 games; he has hit safely in 22 of the last 23 games. His hitting streak is the second longest this season by an Express player, one game shy of Matt Kata's 13-game run. Jason Castro, who did not play in the opener, was 0-for-2 with a walk in the nightcap; he has reached safely in 24 consecutive games.

Iowa rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and then stranded the potential tying run at second base in the bottom of the inning to defeat Round Rock 4-3 in the first game. Wellington Castillo led off the seventh with a double, and Snyder followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Bobby Scales sacrifice fly to deep center scored Castillo and allowed Snyder to reach second. Matt Camp's groundout pushed Snyder to third, and the latter scored on a wild pitch.

Bourgeois singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and stole second. However, Brian Schlitter struck out Navarro to quell the threat and end the game.

It was the 16th one-run loss of the season for the Express and their 13th loss in the opponent's final at bat, three of which have come against the I-Cubs.

The seventh inning spoiled what had been a solid start for Andy Van Hekken, but he took the loss in a complete-game effort. Van Hekken (2-4) allowed four runs on six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

John Gaub (1-1) picked up the victory in relief after pitching a scoreless sixth inning on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Schlitter picked up his seventh save of the season, his second of the series. Starter J.R. Mathes allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

Round Rock plated a pair of runs on two hits in the first inning. Navarro doubled with one out, and Brian Bogusevic followed with an RBI triple to center. Chris Johnson then grounded out to second, scoring Bogusevic.

Iowa got a run back in the third as Scales led off with a single and later scored on Darwin Barney's RBI groundout. The Express answered in the fourth on Locke's RBI double, pushing the Round Rock lead to 3-1. Snyder's leadoff home run in the fifth cut the Cubs deficit to one run and set the stage for the seventh-inning rally.

All seven runs Iowa runs scored in the two games reached base with no outs.

Bogusevic and Michael Garciaparra both had two-hit games in the opener for the Express.

Round Rock and Iowa conclude the four-game series Friday; first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Josh Banks (5-4, 3.63 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, opposite Cubs' right-hander Casey Coleman (5-3, 3.32 ERA).
