Aces Reign Supreme in Tenth, 8-6

June 4, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Sky Sox and Aces wrapped up their series tonight at Security Service Field before a packed house of 7,415 - Reno winning by a score of 8-6 in ten innings.

Rehabbing Rockies closer Huston Street took the mound for the first inning, retiring the side in order. Relieved by recently demoted starter Esmil Rogers to start the second, Reno's bats heated up, plating two in the second before tagging Rogers for three in the third, 5-1.

The Sky Sox would strike back in the fourth with a leadoff double by Cole Garner and subsequent single by Chris Nelson. The rally was short lived, however, as Michael McKenry grounded into a double-play in the next at-bat, scoring Garner from third but also ending the threat.

The Sox tacked on another in the fifth, 5-3, on a Matt Miller wall-ball double to center, drawing within one, 5-4, on a Brad Eldred bloop single to right with two down in the seventh.

The Sky Sox finally took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, benefactors of Reno's fielding miscues on a wacky play.

Travis Metcalf at the plate attempting to bunt the runners up 90 feet from first and second, Reno hurler Blaine Boyer made a hurried throw to third with neither the shortstop nor third baseman reaching in time to cover. The ball skipping to the wall in left field foul territory, Chris Nelson and Michael McKenry both scampered home, putting the Sox up 6-5.

The Aces wouldn't go down quietly in the ninth, however.

Catcher Carlos Corporan reaching on a leadoff single to right, a Mark Hallberg sac bunt went awry for the Sky Sox as Michael McKenry, attempting to get the lead runner at second, sailed the throw into center field, putting runners on second and third. Yunesky Sanchez tying the game on a single to left, the Sky Sox were able to escape with no further damage on a Doug Deeds strikeout and Drew Macias 3-6-1 double-play.

The tenth saw the Aces take the lead on the strength of Brandon Allen's towering two-run shot to right. The Sky Sox unable to mount an eleventh hour rally, the Aces took the night, 8-6. With the loss, the Sky Sox fell to 25-29 while the Aces improved to 24-32.

The Springs and Reno concluding their series, the Sky Sox will travel Salt Lake City tomorrow to take on the Bees. The match will be the first time the two teams have played each other this season.

The Sox will send righty Chaz Roe (2-7, 7.32) to the hill to take on Fernando Rodriguez (0-0, 7.52). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
