Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Round Rock, TX - Early season struggles in one-run games continued for the Tacoma Rainiers (7-7) on Sunday, dropping to 0-4 in such contests with a 5-4 setback to the Round Rock Express (9-5). After a 2-4 road trip, the Rainiers are 3-6 on the road overall.

A walk, single and 5-4-3 double play put a Round Rock runner at third base with two out in the home first inning; Rafael Ortega got the run home with a single to right field. Leading 2-0 in the third, Ortega's second hit, a double to left, made it a three-run deficit for Tacoma.

The Rainiers broke through in the fourth. Mike Ford led off with a walk, and Jake Scheiner promptly followed with his fourth homer, to the alley in right. Davis Wendzel answered with a two-out solo shot in the home half (to LF), his second straight game going yard.

Tacoma trimmed the lead back to a run, making it 4-3 in the fifth. Cesar Hernandez singled and Mason McCoy walked, with Hernandez scoring on a Ford RBI single to center.

The clubs traded single runs in the seventh, as the Express maintained their lead into the late innings. The game was briefly tied after Zach DeLoach singled and stole second base, scoring on a McCoy single to centerfield. Round Rock went back in front when Sandro Fabian doubled to right and came home on a two-out single from Elier Hernandez, the fifth and ultimately winning run.

DeLoach enjoyed his sixth multi-hit game already, early on in his Triple-A debut season; it was his second three-hit game of 2023.

The Rainiers now return home after an off day, to open a six-game homestand against El Paso, a 6:05 PT first pitch on Tuesday at Cheney Stadium.
