Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express (13-23) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to record a 5-4 victory over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (18-17) on Friday night at Dell Diamond. The win forced a series split between the two American Southern Division foes.
Round Rock RHP Connor Sadzeck (2-0, 4.97) earned the win after a perfect eighth inning of relief. New Orleans LHP Sean Burnett (1-1, 4.05) suffered the loss after giving up the two go-ahead Express runs on a total of three hits and a walk in the bottom of the eighth. Round Rock RHP Nick Gardewine earned his first save of the season.
Both starting pitchers posted solid outings as E-Train RHP Yovani Gallardo allowed just two runs on six hits while striking out three in 5.1 innings of work. 'Cakes RHP Ben Meyer was impressive as well, limiting the Express to three runs on seven hits in 7.0 frames.
Rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Tim Lincecum pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief. The righty allowed a hit and a walk while striking out two. Lincecum threw a season-high 22 pitches with 13 landing in the strike zone.
Round Rock opened the scoring in the fifth thanks to a Jose Cardona solo home run. New Orleans answered right back with three runs in the top of the sixth. DH Eric Campbell doubled prior to a Cristhian Adames RBI single that tied the game and ended Gallardo's night. An ensuing Rafael Ortega triple off RHP Tayler Scott plated another run before C Austin Nola singled to extend the New Orleans lead to 3-1.
The E-Train tied the game right back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Scott Heineman single followed by a Willie Calhoun RBI double. Following a Tommy Joseph single, 2B Andy Ibanez popped a sacrifice fly to deep right field, allowing Calhoun to tag and score from third, leveling the contest at 3-3.
In the eighth, Calhoun, Joseph and Ibanez teamed up for three straight singles off Burnett, the latest of which gave Round Rock the lead. Cardona then poked a sacrifice fly to right field, sending Joseph to the plate with a critical insurance run.
New Orleans attempted to rally in the ninth. CF Magneuris Sierra and Campbell tallied consecutive one-out singles off Gardewine. A J.T. Riddle sacrifice fly narrowed the gap to 5-4, but Gardewine enticed Adames into a flyout to end the rally.
The Express now hit the road for a nine-day, eight-game roadtrip beginning with a four-game set against the Iowa Cubs. Round Rock RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-3, 4.45) is scheduled to start against Iowa RHP Luke Farrell (0-1, 5.91). First pitch on Saturday night at Principal Park in Des Moines is set for 7:08 p.m.
