Explorers Take Opener from Goldeyes

After the Goldeyes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, the Explorers scored five times over the third and fourth innings to move in front. In the bottom of the third, Jayce Ray doubled down the left field line and scored Sioux City's first run when Nate Samson doubled off the bottom of the left field wall. John Nogowski followed with an RBI single through the right side that trimmed Winnipeg's lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Josh Vitters led off with a single through the left side and took third on a Tony Campana bunt single that resulted in an errant throw to first base. Michael Lang tripled home Vitters and Campana with the tying and go-ahead runs respectively. Ray then hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Lang to make it 5-3.

Ray doubled leading off the bottom of the sixth, took third on Samson's flyball to right, and scored the final run of the game two batters later when Tyler Ogle hit a sacrifice fly to centre.

The Goldeyes brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Explorers' closer PJ Francescon recorded his fifth save of the year. During the inning, Alixon Suarez came back from a 1-2 count to work an 11-pitch, leadoff single.

Reggie Abercrombie hit a leadoff home run in the top of the second to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, an Abercrombie fielder's choice and a Shawn Pleffner two-out, RBI single helped make it 3-0 before the Explorers started their comeback in the bottom of the inning.

Cody Forsythe (1-1) earned the win for the Explorers, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six and two-thirds innings. Forsythe walked one and struck out six.

Zach Nuding (1-2) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in five and two-thirds. Nuding walked two and struck out one.

Joeanthony Rivera, Josh Laxer, and Kenny Mathews combined for two and one-third scoreless innings in relief of Nuding. Andrew Sohn had three hits for the Goldeyes and is now 14-for-32 (.438) in his last nine games. In the bottom of the eighth, Casio Grider made a relay throw to the plate to retire Samson who tried to score from first on a base hit to centre field from Nogowski.
