Canaries Drop Extra-Inning Heart-Breaker in Lincoln

LINCOLN, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries lost the opening game of a three-game series against the Lincoln SaltDogs on Tuesday night by the final score of 7-6 in 12 innings at Haymarket Park.

Canaries starting pitcher Bryce Morrow looked good in his fourth start of the season. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings of work. The first year Canary only had one bad inning, allowing two runs on three hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning. He settled down after that, retiring 8 of his final 11 batters faced, wrapping up his day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th inning.

The Birds were held in check over the first five innings, but turned the game around in the top of the 6th when Ty Morrison led off the inning with a single and Burt Reynolds walked to put two men on base. Chris Jacobs flew out to left and Jabari Henry struck out looking before Blake Schmit tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI triple into center field.

The Canaries took their first lead in the top of the 7th inning when Morrison sent a two-run single into right. Morrison later scored on a fielder's choice before Jabari Henry capped off the four-run inning with an RBI sac-fly to give the Canaries a 6-2 lead.

Lincoln started their comeback attempt with a Brandon Jacobs RBI double in the bottom of the 7th inning, but still trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the 9th.

Canaries closer Jose Ortega retired the first two batters of the inning before walking two batters and plunking another to load the bases before Cesar Valera and Curt Smith combined for back-to-back hits to tie the game at 6-6. It was the first blown save of the season for Ortega, who was able to force extra innings after retiring Christian Ibara for the final out in the 9th.

The Canaries had plenty of chances down the stretch, but couldn't get the offense going again after scoring six unanswered runs in the 6th and 7th innings. The Birds left seven men on base over their final five innings, but still found themselves in a 6-6 tie going into the bottom of the 12th inning.

The SaltDogs loaded the bases in the 12th with three straight walks before pinch-hitter Brent Dean hit a single off of Canaries relief pitcher Josh Ferrell to score Valera for the game winning run. It was the fourth straight walk-off win at Haymarket Park for the SalDogs, and the third loss of the season for Ferrell.

Morrison paced the Canaries offense, finishing the night 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jabari Henry also had a two hit night, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in the loss.

The series continues at 6:45 PM on Wednesday night when RHP Grady Wood takes the mound for the Sioux Falls Canaries against Lincoln's RHP Carlos Pimentel. Fans can listen to all of the action, starting at 6:30 PM on AM-1230, FM-98.1 Sioux Falls Sports Radio, KWSN.

The Canaries return home on Friday night for a three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders. Gates will open at 5 PM and kids of all ages can bring their glove to the Birdcage and play catch in the outfield until 6:30 PM. Those looking to relax can bring a blanket for the outfield grass and watch the movie, The Sandlot, on the video board. In addition, fans of age can enjoy $1 beers and all fans can take advantage of $1 hot dogs from 5 PM to 6:30 PM.

Bouncy houses will be available starting at 5:30 PM and a wristband purchase allow kids to bounce for the entire game. First pitch will take place just after 7 PM and the ever famous All-Star Fireworks show, presented by Orthopedic Institute and Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, will take place following the last pitch.
