KANSAS CITY, Kans. (June 6, 2017) - The Wichita Wingnuts erased a 5-0 deficit, but could not cap off the comeback with a victory, falling 7-6 in 14 innings to the Kansas City T-Bones Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Trailing 5-0 and limited to just three hits through six innings, the Wingnuts (11-8) came alive in the seventh. The first five all reached in the frame, with a Brent Clevlen RBI single and Matt Chavez two-run single cutting the deficit to 5-3.
In the ninth, Chavez was at it again with a run-scoring single, and Brennen Salgado then tied it with a single of his own. Jared Wilson worked out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
TJ Mittelstaedt gave Wichita their first lead of the night with a two-out homer in the 11th, but the T-Bones (10-8) answered in the home half, drawing three walks and tying the score on a sacrifice fly.
Kansas City had the better of the opportunities beyond the 11th, and finally capitalized in the 14th. Marcus Lemon reached on a one-out single, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Kevin Keyes double. After an intentional walk and infield base hit, Patrick Brady finally ended the game after nearly five hours with a walk-off single to score Keyes.
The T-Bones relied heavily on the long ball to jump out to their 5-0 lead, with homers by Zach Walters, Keyes and Leo Rojas accounting for the first four runs, and a Keyes run-scoring single making it 5-0 in the fifth.
The Wingnuts bullpen pitched well in the loss, working out of bases loaded threats in both the ninth and 12th innings. For the night, six Wichita relievers combined to allow two runs in 8.2 innings.
The Wingnuts will look to avoid a sweep as they wrap-up their three-game series with the T-Bones Wednesday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Right-hander Tyler Kane (2-1, 5.09) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Kansas City will counter with fellow righty Jeff Walters (1-0, 1.80). First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m., and the game will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and www.americanassociationbaseball.tv .
