Explorers Take Down St. Paul 3-1

St. Paul, MN-----The Sioux City Explorers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over St. Paul here Friday.
After a scoreless five innings, the Explorers took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a two-out single by Austin Gallagher that scored Eliezer Mesa from third base. Mesa had led off the inning with a single and ended up at third base when Saints starting and losing pitcher Mark Hamburger made a throwing error at first trying to pick off Mesa.
The Explorers added two more runs in the seventh inning, one on an infield hit by Leugim Barroso. On the same play, Hamburger, trying to get Barroso at first base made another throwing error that allowed Alberto Espinosa to score from second and the Explorers led 3-0.
In the St. Paul seventh, Explorers starter and winning hurler Richard Salazar retired the first batter, but gave up three straight singles as the Saints scored their only run of the game. Chris Bodishbaugh came in relief with the bases loaded and retired the final two batters.
With the Explorers leading 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, St. Paul loaded the bases with two outs and Jimmer Kennedy struck out Brad Boyer to end the game and Kennedy recorded his third save of the year.
Salazar pitched six and one third innings picking up his fourth straight win increasing his record to 8-3.
The Explorers and St. Paul will meet in the second game of the three-game series Saturday at Midway Stadium with game time 7:05pm.
