Wingnuts Split Well-Pitched Twinbill

Wichita Wingnuts News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NJ- The Wichita Wingnuts (54-26) split a double header with the Can-Am League's New Jersey Jackals (40-37) at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday night, dropping the opener 3-1 and winning the nightcap 2-1.

In the second game, Anthony Capra turned in a great effort, allowing one earned run on four hits over seven innings to notch the win. Capra walked three, struck out seven, and retired the final nine batters to face him. Capra has allowed five or fewer hits in 10 of 13 starts this season.

Josh Dew worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh to earn his 20th save and tie a Wingnuts' single-season record. Dew stranded the tying and winning runs on base when Brandon Jones flied out to center field to end the game. Byron Embry saved 20 games for Wichita in 2008. Dew also had 20 in 2011.

John Rodriguez helped Wichita erase a 1-0 deficit with a two-run home run to right-center field in the top of the fourth inning.

New Jersey's only run of game two came on a two-out, RBI single to left from Bryan Sabatella in the bottom of the third.

Jackals' starter Brandon Moore took a complete game loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. Moore walked two and struck out eight.

In the opener, Jackals' starter Jon Lucas held the Wingnuts to one run over six and one-third innings to earn the win.

With runners on second and third and two out in the bottom of the third, Nick Giarraputo blooped a single to shallow right field that scored Jeremy Barnes and Bryan Sabatella with the game's first runs. Both runs in the inning were unearned against Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra.

Jake Kahaulelio led off the top of the fourth with a triple to right-center and scored on a groundball to second from John Rodriguez.

Cody Johnson lined a solo home run to right-center leading off the bottom of the fourth to provide the game's final margin.

Guerra took a tough, complete game loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits in six innings. Guerra walked one and struck out 10, tying a career-high set last Sunday at Newark.

Lucas walked one and struck out four en route to the win.

Rodriguez's 12-game hitting streak came to an end in the opener.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Central Time. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.pressboxproductionsradio.com
