Ewing Hat Trick Leads Nailers Comeback
January 6, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
Bryan "Boomer" Ewing recorded his 2nd hat trick of the season in leading the Nailers to a come from behind 4-2 victory at the Cincinnati Cyclones Tuesday night at WesBanco Arena. The first ever Wheeling native to play professional hockey now leads the team with 19 goals and is 3rd in the ECHL. Ewing has 10 goals in his last 7 games and is the first Nailer to record two hat tricks this season with his first coming December 26th against Reading.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the 3rd period Ewing notched his 2nd goal of the game at 2:31 on a 5-on-3 power-play chipping it off the right shoulder of Cyclones goalie Kyle Gajewski and into the top of the net to knot the score at 2-2.
A few minutes later David Brown made one of his several dazzling saves on the night as he got a glove on the breakaway drive of Jimmy Kilpatrick to keep the score even. Brown picked up the win for the 2nd game in a row to improve to 9-2-2.
Ewing would light the lamp again at 11:57 of the 3rd to give the Nailers their first lead of the night. Chris Snavely's shot was bobbled in the air by Gajewski and Ewing hustled in to whack it about 3 feet off the ice from the left-wing side of the crease and into the top of the net for the game-winner.
Late in the game Jordan Morrison pressured the Cyclones behind their own goal and forced an errant pass that was picked off by Chris Snavely who spun and scored the empty-netter to seal the victory. For Snavely it's the 2nd game in a row in which he has scored after he also lit the lamp on the game-winner in the Saturday night game vs. Elmira.
The Nailers extend their lead I first place in the North with a record of 22-6-5 for 49 points which is 5 points better than the Johnstown Chiefs. Wheeling still has one game in hand on the Chiefs as well. The Nailers are 6-1-1 against Cincinnati this year with their 9th of 11 encounters coming up this Sunday afternoon at WesBanco Arena.
For the 2nd game win in a row the Nailers had a pair of power play goals while holding the opposition to 0 for 4. Wheeling went 2 for 7 on their man advantage.
The Nailers are 10-1-2 on the road this year. It's only the 2nd time the Nailers have come from behind to win after trailing at the 2nd intermission.
Wheeling will return to home ice on Friday, January 9th and Sunday, January 11th with a road game sandwiched in the middle on Saturday, January 10th..
The Friday, January 9 game against the Dayton Bombers at 7:35 is Nailers Poster Giveaway night for the first 2500 fans. It's also Friday Four Pack Night where you can get 4 tickets, 4 sodas, 4 hot dogs and a popcorn all for only $44. It's Sunday Family FunDay with a post-game skate with the Nailers after the game. Fans must bring their own skates and gloves to participate. It's also Guaranteed Win Day: If the Nailers and Steelers both win on Sunday then everyone in attendance will receive free admission to a future Nailers game.
