Everett Silvertips News Release

Vancouver, B.C. - The Everett Silvertips won their first road game this season in thrilling fashion. After trailing for two periods, Everett scored three goals in the 3rd period to tie the game and win in a dramatic nine round shootout after a game winning goal from Matthew Ius. Kyle Beach started the Everett comeback by scoring his 3rd goal of the year on a breakaway to begin the 3rd period. Kellan Tochkin scored two goals in the last three minutes of the game to tie the contest. Shayne Barrie had 38 saves in regulation and stopped seven of nine shots in the shootout. The Silvertips remain in 3rd place in the U.S. division with nine points in nine games.

The Vancouver Giants jumped on the scoreboard first. After some fine stick-handling by Vancouver Center James Wright, the puck found its way just crossing the goal line past Everett Goaltender Shayne Barrie to make the score 1-0 at the 10:53 mark of the 1st period. Vancouver ended the period leading in shots 14 to 5 and taking the lead going into the 2nd period.

The Giants continued to outshoot Everett through the 2nd period and despite Shayne Barrie's strong play Vancouver added their 2nd goal of the night. Leading the WHL in Power Play percentage, 31.6 percent, the Giants took advantage of their first power play of the night. Vancouver Defenseman Jonathon Blum scored on the one-timer at 16:37 of the 2nd period. The period ended with Vancouver up 2-0 and outshooting Everett 28 to 13. Everett has now been outscored 14-3 in the 2nd period this year.

The Silvertips finally beat Vancouver Goaltender Tyson Sexsmith after Kyle Beach scored on the breakaway at 7:29 of the 3rd period making the score 2-1. The Giants struck again on the Power Play as Vancouver's Mike Piluso scored for Vancouver on the one-timer making the score 3-1. It only took Everett 33 seconds to respond as Kellan Tochkin scored his second goal of the year. Tochkin banked a shot off the skate of Vancouver's Sexsmith driving the 'Tips within one goal with three minutes to play. The Silvertips pulled Barrie with two minutes to play giving Everett the man advantage. Tochkin struck again at the 18:37 mark scoring Everett's third goal and tying the game 3-3 bringing both teams into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime the Silvertips went to their first shootout of the '08-'09 season. It took nine rounds before Matthew Ius scored the game winning goal on Sexsmith to complete the comeback against the Vancouver Giants winning 4-3.
