Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - After battling for 12 innings in a crucial game on Saturday, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, experienced déjàvu as Evansville Otters own right fielder Chris Sweeney delivered the walk-off hit, this time an RBI double, to solidify a 4-3 extra-inning win at Bosse Field.
In the beginning of the game, Evansville starter Connor Little held the Wild Things to zero runs through the first four innings, even stranding the bases loaded in the first and second.
After a solo home run in the second inning Sweeney, followed by an RBI single from left fielder Jeremy Nowak in the third put the Wild Things behind 2-0. Centerfielder Scott Kalamar blasted a solo home run of his own in the fifth to make it a one-run ballgame. Kalamar led Washington at the plate on the night, going 3-6 and being a triple shy of the cycle.
In the eighth inning, Washington catcher Jim Vahalik knotted the game at 2-2 with a single that scored third baseman Carter Bell.
As both teams fought and clawed to push a run across, the contest entered extra innings. It took until the 12th inning for either team to push a run across.
After an Evansville error and balk saw Washington second baseman Garrett Rau on third base with one out, Bell plated Rau with a safety squeeze to give the late-night advantage to the Wild Things, 3-2. Evansville had other plans, however. Back-to-back singles by Nowak and center fielder Chris Elder set the stage for Sweeney, who hit the game-winning home run the night before. Sweeney was recast as Evansville's hero with a two-run double into left field that not only gave the Otters the 4-3 win, it also solidified Evansville's position as the outright leader of the East Division.
Washington will look to avenge their late-inning loss in the final game of the three-game series against Evansville on Sunday, August 17. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Listen to all the action with Randy Gore on WJPA 95.3 FM or follow the live game updates on Twitter @washwildthings.
