Slammers Sneak by Freedom

(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (34-45) out-hit the Joliet Slammers (31-50) on Sunday night but fell in 10 innings to Joliet by a score of 3-2.
The Slammers got on the board in the first on a Matt Weaver two-run home run. They wouldn't score again until the 10th. Jorge Marban tossed five innings of two-run ball, walking three and striking out seven in a no-decision.
Florence cut the Joliet lead in half in the fifth on a RBI double by Adam Taylor. Zak Blair tripled to lead-off the sixth and Sam Eberle singled him home to tie the game.
Florence got the lead-off man on in the ninth but a failed sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a double play.
Everything fell apart in the bottom of the 10th. Ed Kohout (2-3) walked Adam Lewis with one out and the Freedom brought in Chris Squires. Grant DeBruin singled off Squires, putting runners at first and second with one away. Then with two away, Squires uncorked a wild pitch to move both runners up 90 feet. Down 2-1 in the count to the dangerous Russell Moldenhauer, the Freedom elected to put him on first, loading the bases.
The move worked as Squires struck out Matt Weaver. Unfortunately, before he K'd Weaver to end the inning, he uncorked another wild pitch, allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Florence went down quietly in the 10th.
The Freedom have an off day on Monday before taking on the Windy City ThunderBolts on Tuesday at UC Health Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
