Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - For the second consecutive night, Evansville Otters (48-30) outfielder Chris Sweeney provided a walk-off hit, this time with a go-ahead game-winning two run double in the 12th for a 4-3 win over the Washington Wild Things.
The four hour, 34 minute victory in front of 6,169 fans moves the Otters into sole possession of first place in the Frontier League East Division and sets up Evansville for their first possible sweep of the season on Sunday night.
The Otters allowed an unearned run to Washington in the top of the 12th, only to rally back in the bottom of the inning for the win. Facing closer Jonathan Kountis, Evansville received back to back one out hits from Jeremy Nowak and Chris Elder. Sweeney then clubbed a fly ball to left field that went over Pat Kregeloh's head. The ball rolled to the fence before Kregeloh retrieved the ball and threw it home. Nowak and Elder both scored ahead of the late throw, earning Evansville their second straight win on a walk-off Chris Sweeney hit. Sweeney ended Friday night's game in nine innings on a walk-off home run and secured the series win for the Otters with a 12th inning double on Saturday.
Evansville starting pitcher Connor Little left the bases loaded in the first and second innings before the Otters rewarded him with a 2-0 lead. Sweeney hit a solo home run in the second and Nowak added an RBI single in the third.
Down 2-0, Washington outfielder Scott Kalamar hit a home run in the fifth to pull within a run. It was the only run allowed by Little who went 6.0 innings, yielding just four hits and recording seven strikeouts. The Wild Things tied the game with a Jim Vahalik RBI single in the eighth off reliever Evan Mott and the game stayed a 2-2 tie to the 12th.Washington went ahead 3-2 on a bunt single from Carter Bell in the 12th only to see Evansville win the game moments later in the bottom of the inning.
Sweeney ended the night 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Nik Balog, Nowak, and Elder each had two hits. 3B Shayne Houck went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 17 games in a row.
The teams will meet again on Sunday night at 5:05 pm CDT at Bosse Field. LHP Zac Fuesser (8-1, 1.63 ERA) will start for Washington and RHP Trevor Walch (5-2, 3.55) will be on the mound for Evansville. It is Toyota Night and there will also be postgame fireworks.
