St. Lucie Mets News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ervin Santana made his third start for the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday and it was his best yet. Santana, signed by New York to a minor league deal in May, fired six scoreless innings as the Mets defeated the Clearwater Threshers 5-0 at Spectrum Field.
The two-time MLB All Star had his second start on Saturday in Lakeland cut short by rain. Santana returned on short rest Wednesday and only needed 79 pitches to breeze through his outing. He held the Threshers to four hits while walking two and striking out six.
Mets reliever Ezequiel Zabaleta did not allow a hit over the final three innings to get his third save.
The Mets scored the only run they needed in the first inning when Jacob Zanon pummeled a home run to left field. It was his fourth homer of the season.
Mitch Ghelfi hit a run-scoring ground out in the fourth inning and Manny Rodriguez followed with a RBI single to make it 3-0.
Carlos Cortes blooped a two-run single into right field in the seventh to put the Mets ahead 5-0.
Cortes went 2 for 4 with a walk, two RBI and a run.
Zanon also went 2 for 4. Jeremy Vasquez was 2 for 5 with a double.
Clearwater starter Andrew Brown took the loss. He was knocked around for five hits and three runs in five innings.
Threshers first baseman Alec Bohm went 1 for 1 with a double and three walks.
The Mets snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Mets (31-33) and Threshers (35-29) play the third game of their series at Spectrum Field on Wednesday. First pitch is 10:30 a.m.
