Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The defending Florida State League Champion Fort Myers Miracle are returning to the postseason after winning the First Half South Division. The Miracle secured a playoff berth with a 7-2 win over the Tampa Tarpons on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
After winning game one of the doubleheader to shrink their magic number to 1, the Miracle wasted little time jumping out to an early lead in game two. Royce Lewis led off the game with a single before moving to second on a throwing error. After advancing to third on a ground out, Lewis raced home when Janson Junk uncorked a wild pitch.
Ryan Costello made it 3-0 in favor of Fort Myers with a two-run double down the right-field line in the top of the second.
The Miracle added another run on a wild pitch in the fourth before scoring three more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-0.
Tampa scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Pablo Olivares single and a Wendell Rijo ground out.
In a spot start for the Miracle, right-hander Melvi Acosta tossed five scoreless innings. Acosta (4-1) scattered four hits. He walked one and struck out three. Alex Phillips followed and allowed two runs in two innings.
Miracle pitching has held the Tarpons to three runs in 23 innings.
The five-game series continues on Wednesday night with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
