Error Hurts RailCats in Opening Night Loss
May 25, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
An untimely error cost the RailCats Friday night in their home opener as they fell 3-1 against the Wichita Wingnuts in front of 5,256 fans at U. S. Steel Yard. The loss dropped their record to 4-4 on the season.
Wichita trailed 1-0 before taking the lead in the eighth inning against RailCats reliever Chad Rhoades. Ryan Khoury led off with a walk and he was followed by a Jake Kahaulelio double. John Rodriguez was then intentionally walked to load the bases as Will Krout came on in relief. With nobody out, Mitch Einertson skied a fly ball to deep center field that bounced off the glove of Jason James, scoring Khoury and Kahaulelio. A C.J. Ziegler single to left then scored Rodriguez to give the Wingnuts the 3-1 lead. Rhoades (0-1) was charged with all three runs, two earned, in the loss.
The RailCats loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the inning but James grounded into a fielder's choice at third to end the rally against reliever Edgar Martinez.
The RailCats broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Jason James led off with a single, Kyle Haines walked and Mike Rohde singled to load the bases. After Craig Maddox struck out, Chris Carrara was hit by a pitch to put the 'Cats on top 1-0.
The Wingnuts threatened in the seventh getting runners on first and third before reliever Chad Rhoades got Mike Conroy to fly out to center fielder Jason James. David Peralta tried tagging from third base but was out at home on a great throw by James to end the inning and keep the RailCats in front 1-0.
RailCats starter Andrew Johnston lasted five innings, matching a team-high for the season. He held the Wingnuts scoreless on three hits, walking two and striking out a pair. He escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the second. Back-to-back batters hit comebackers to the mound, and Johnston forced both runners out at home. Khoury grounded out to second to end the threat.
Greg Tagert has not yet announced a starting pitcher for the second game of the series on Saturday. Jose Perez will start for the Wingnuts. First pitch is at 6:10 PM at U. S. Steel Yard.
