St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - Robert Coe looks anything like a rookie pitcher as he turned in another solid pitching performance and the offense pounded out 12 hits as the St. Paul Saints won for the third straight night with a 5-2 victory on Friday night in front of 4,424 at Midway Stadium.
Through five innings Robert Coe allowed just two hits and when he did get into trouble he made the pitches to work out of the jam while getting a little help from his defense. After a two out single from Brandon Newton, Coe unleashed two wild pitches allowing Newton to advance to third. Catcher Alex Garabedian, however, threw out Newton as he danced to far down the line.
In the fifth Ryan Priddy walked with one out and Brian Bistagne doubled him to third with two outs. Coe, however, got Newton to fly out to end the inning. Coe went 7.0 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Saints offense broke through in the third inning when Jim Rapoport reached on a two out line drive single off the backside of pitcher Jason Jarvis. He stole second, one of four on the night for the Saints, and scored on a single by Jose Hernandez to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Hernandez stole second and scored on Shane Costa's RBI single giving the Saints a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth Jon Townsend gave the Saints a 3-0 lead with a solo shot to left, his first of the season.
With the Saints leading 3-2 in the eighth they tacked on two insurance runs as Ronnie Bourquin led off with a walk. Tanner Townsend dropped down a bunt single to third and Wally Backman Jr.'s throw to first went awry allowing Bourquin to score and sending Tanner Townsend to third. Three batters later Jon Townsend knocked home his brother with an RBI single.
The same two teams meet Saturday night in the second game of the three game series as the Saints send RHP Chris Odegaard (0-0 3.18) to the mound against Explorers RHP Max Whieldon (0-0, 3.60). It is Invasive Species Night presented by Tonka Beer Company. The first 500 kids 14 and under receive the Carp No More giveaway. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and inside Midway Stadium on 87.9 FM.
