Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, IN- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3-1 at U.S. Steel Yard on Friday night.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the eighth inning, the Wingnuts rallied for three runs to take their first lead. Ryan Khoury drew a leadoff walk against reliever Chad Rhoades and went to third when Jake Kahaulelio doubled to deep left field. The RailCats opted to walk John Rodriguez to load the bases with no outs and then summoned Will Krout from the bullpen. Mitch Einertson hit a hard line drive to center field that was dropped by Jason James. Khoury and Kahaulelio scored to give Wichita a 2-1 lead, and Einertson was creditied with a sacrifice fly. C.J. Ziegler ripped a single through the hole on the left side to score Rodriguez with the Wingnuts' third run.
Edgar Martinez worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Josh Dew struck out the side in a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the year.
The RailCats scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth against Wingnuts' starter Josh Lowey. James singled through the right side leading off and advanced to second on a walk to Kyle Haines. Mike Rohde loaded the bases with a single to left. After Lowey struck out Craig Maddox, Chris Carrara was grazed by a pitch to force home James. Lowey prevented a big inning by inducing Adam Klein to ground into a double play.
Lowey earned the win with seven strong innings, allowing just the one earned run on three hits. Lowey struck out five and walked three.
Andrew Johnston started for the RailCats and took a no-decision. Johnston worked five scoreless innings, allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out two.
Rhoades was charged with the loss.
Salomon Manriquez extended his hitting streak to seven games.
