Erie Beats Sarnia 3-2 in a Shootout

The Sarnia Sting suffered a tough loss Friday night at home before 3,414 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre, losing 3-2 in a shootout to the Erie Otters. Darren Raddysh tied the game with a goal late in the second period and then scored the winner in the shootout.

Troy Lajeunesse and Jakob Chychrun scored once each for Sarnia, while Jake Marchment also tallied for Erie in regulation. Devon Williams, who is having an MVP season between the pipes for Erie, turned away all but two shots, as Sarnia out shot Erie 41-27.

The loss snapped a four game winning streak, but Sarnia did manage to pick up a point in their fifth straight game. The last three games including tonight, saw the Sting play three major OHL contenders in Windsor, Kitchener and Erie. Sarnia came out with five of a possible six points during that stretch, putting out a major statement to the league and becoming a team that other opponents might want to avoid come playoff time.

Charlie Graham, got his fourth straight start and turned in a stellar performance with 24 saves during regulation and overtime and then turned away four straight shots in the Shootout before Darren Raddysh beat him on the Otters fifth attempt.

A pair of goals highlighted the first period of action as both teams found the back of the net. Sarnia drew first blood as Lajeunesse scored early, 2:15 into the game. It was Lajeunesse 12th goal, matching his total of last season with the Sting, as a rookie. Devon Peliani and Alex Black were credited with the assists. The Erie Otters Jake Marchment scored the tying goal at 15:47. The goal was unassisted and came while the Otters were shorthanded. Sarnia outshot the Erie Otters 11-8.

For the second straight period each team scored once and left the ice at intermission tied 2-2. Erie outshot Sarnia 14-9. Chychrun, put Sarnia up 2-1 on a power play goal at 15:49, from Konecny and Mistele. It stayed that way until the final minute of play, as Erie scored the tying goal from Raddysh at 19:14. Vanya Lodnia received the lone assist.

The third period was scoreless and for a second straight game overtime was needed to decide the hard fought game. From there the game went into a shoot-out. For Sarnia Zacha, Konecny, Mistele, Chychrun and Studnicka could not put the puck in and Erie won the game on their fifth attempt with a goal from Raddysh.
