Saginaw Spirit News Release

GUELPH, ON - In the final matchup of the 2015-16 season, the Saginaw Spirit (20-25-3-2 45 points, 4th West Division) take on the Guelph Storm (10-32-4-2 26 points, 5th Midwest Division) from the Sleeman Centre in Guelph, Ontario at 7:30 p.m.

After an impressive win against division-rival Sault Ste. Marie on last Friday night, the Spirit have dropped three consecutive contests, including a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Guelph Storm on January 31st. Saginaw is going for the season series win tonight, after taking two of the first three games against the Storm this season. Top performers this season for the Spirit against Guelph include top scoring forward Artem Artemov with three goals and an assist and 16-year old rookie Brady Gilmour with a goal and three helpers. Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Mitchell Stephens led the Spirit to their first win of the season against the Storm back on October 3rd with a hat trick in an 8-5 win.

The Storm snapped a five-game skid on Sunday afternoon in Saginaw, but fell in Mississauga by a final of 4-1. One of Guelph's bright spots this season is the play of overage goaltender Michael Giugovaz. Acquired from Windsor in November, Giugovaz has registered seven of the Storm's 10 wins this season, and has managed to post a 7-5-2-2 record since joining the Storm. The Storm do not currently have an NHL drafted player, but that could change come this June with rear guard Christian Mieritz and top scorer James McEwan making the NHL Central Scouting midterm list. The Denmark native Mieritz was a second rick Import pick of the Hamilton Bulldogs in 2015 and came to the Storm via trade this season. Mieritz has seen limited action with the Storm due to an injury. James McEwan leads Guelph in goals (20) and points (37) this season.
