Des Moines, IA March 9, 2014 - The Iowa Energy defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Sunday night 113-112 at Wells Fargo Arena in a game that featured 14 lead changes in the fourth quarter.
Iowa jumped out to the quick 8-0 lead before the Vipers scored 11 straight. Rio Grande Valley pushed their lead to as many as 10 in the first quarter and led 26-20 after one.
The Vipers outscored the Energy 36-27 in the second quarter behind Houston Rockets assignee Robert Covington, who had 15 of his team high 25 points in the quarter. The Vipers stretched their lead to 22 in the quarter took a 62-47 lead into the half.
The third quarter belonged to the Energy, outscoring the Vipers 37-20 in the quarter. Washington Wizards assignee Glen Rice, Jr. had 10 of his 22 points in the third. Iowa led 84-82 heading into the final quarter of play.
The Vipers led 112-108 with 41.4 seconds to go before Patrick Christopher grabbed and offensive rebound and put it in to pull Iowa within 2. The Energy held the Vipers on the next possession and Othyus Jeffers converted the three point play with 1.9 seconds to go to give Iowa the 1 point lead. Covington's shot fell short at the buzzer to give the Energy the victory. Iowa improves to 22-15. The Vipers fall to 26-13.
The Vipers were led by Covington's 25 points and 8 rebounds. Rockets assignee added 24 points. Dario Hunt had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gary Talton had 10 points and 10 assists.
The Energy were led by Othyus Jeffers, who finished with 33 points and 13 points. Rice Jr. had 22 points and 14 boards. Christopher added 20 points. Austin Freeman had 16 points off the bench.
The Energy travel West for three games before returning to Wells Fargo Arena on Monday, March 17th against the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
