SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors dropped the Bakersfield Jam 98-92 in front of a capacity crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena Saturday night.
Santa Cruz's Cameron Jones led all scorers with 26 points. Seth Curry scored 17, while Joe Alexander recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Mychel Thompson and Lance Goulbourne each scored 12 points off the bench, and Daniel Nwaelele grabbed 10 boards. Nemanja Nedovic, currently on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, scored seven points, while Golden State assignee Ognjen Kuzmic grabbed seven boards.
Bakersfield was paced by Ike Diogu, who had a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 16 boards. Dwight Buycks, currently on assignment from the Toronto Raptors, also scored 19, while Markeith Cummings scored 17 off the bench.
There were 11 lead changes in the first three quarters. Santa Cruz took a 22-21 lead at the end of the first off a Mychel Thompson three-pointer with 1.0 seconds left, and the Warriors pushed their lead to as much as seven in the second quarter. Bakersfield kept it close, cutting the deficit to just two heading into intermission. The contest was tied at 53 with 8:02 left in the third, but Santa Cruz went on a 7-0 run, powered by five pivotal points from Cameron Jones, and the Warriors never looked back. Santa Cruz led by as much as 12, and while the Jam was able to cut the lead to three, the Warriors had an answer and won by six.
Santa Cruz shot 50.0% from the floor compared to Bakersfield's 33.3% shooting. The Warriors had more assists (23-21) and blocks (8-1), while the Jam collected more rebounds (52-50), scored more points in the paint (40-36) and had more steals (17-4).
The Santa Cruz Warriors will hit the road for a game against their West Division rival, the Idaho Stampede, on Wednesday, March 12 at 6:00 p.m. in Boise.
