Springfield Armor News Release
ERIE, Pa. - After trailing though the first three quarters Sunday afternoon, the Springfield Armor (17-23), presented by MGM Springfield, stormed back in the fourth to knock off the Erie BayHawks (13-27) 113-109 inside Erie Insurance Arena.
Springfield struggled from the field in the first half as the team shot a combined 34 percent from the field and just 50 percent (9-for-18) from the charity stripe. The Armor fell behind by as many as 17 and never held a lead, but a late 10-0 run over the final 2:44 of the half helped Springfield trim the BayHawks' edge to just seven entering the locker room. Six of those final 10 points came out of the hand of forward Devin Ebanks who combined with Jeff Foote for 18 first-half points (nine apiece).
Erie's Micah Downs used a hot hand from long distance for his game-high 14 points at the break, hitting 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. His four treys would be the only four connections for the BayHawks from three-point land as the rest of the team went a combined 0-for-5. Erie also used a presence in the paint to build its 51-44 advantage, outscoring Springfield 30-24 inside and also pulled down 20 boards on Armor misses.
Springfield rallied in the third, pulling within one point several times behind 11 points in the quarter from Anderson who accounted for just one point through the first half. Erie eventually entered the final frame with a four-point lead after Ricky Davis connected on all four three-point attempts for 12 points in the third.
The Armor continued to claw back, taking their first lead of the game with 6:16 to play in the fourth quarter (92-91) after a pair of free throws from Anderson who would go on to finish with a game-high 24 points. From that point forward, Springfield would outscore the BayHawks 21-18 the rest of the way, fending off Erie for a 113-109 victory.
The Armor dominated on the glass, outrebounding the BayHawks 57-41 for the game and 28-12 in the second half. After going 0-for-4 from the field in the first half, Anderson made 7-of-8 attempts over the final 24 minutes. Khalif Wyatt added 19 off the bench, 12 coming in the fourth quarter as Springfield outscored Erie 34-26 in the final frame. All five starters reached double figures for the Armor, while Foote (15 points, 11 rebounds), Ebanks (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Willie Reed (16 points, 15 rebounds) each registered double-doubles.
After going 16-of-47 from the field in the first half, Springfield hit 57 percent of its shots to finish the game.
Erie's Terrence Jennings led the way for the BayHawks on the offensive end with 23 points, while Lewis Jackson scored 18 and dished out a game-high 15 assists. The BayHawks shot 67 percent (14-of-21) in the third quarter, but the Armor put 26 points on the board from down low in the stanza and 42 in the paint through the final half of play.
The Armor will resume their road trip on Friday, March 14 inside Erie Insurance Arena once again for a 7:00 p.m. tip against the BayHawks. For more information on the Armor, visit www.ArmorHoops.com or call (413) 746-3263. Keep up with the Armor on Facebook and Twitter!
