Emotional Opening Weekend Comes to a Close

South Carolina Stingrays News Release


The South Carolina Stingrays finished opening weekend with a 1-1 record facing the Wheeling Nailers on opening night and the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday. On Friday night, the Stingrays scored four first period goals at North Charleston Coliseum and held on to beat Wheeling by a final of 5-4 in front of a sell out crowd of 6,812. Rob Ricci picked up his first two goals of the season and Keith Johnson added a goal and an assist. Prior to the game, the Stingrays raised their third Kelly Cup Championship banner to the rafters of the North Charleston Coliseum. On Saturday evening the Charlotte Checkers came into town and earned a 3-1 victory over the Stingrays. Matt Scherer started the scoring 25 seconds into the contest for South Carolina, but the Checkers tallied goals in all three periods for the victory. The Stingrays host the Gwinnett Gladiators for a three game series starting Tuesday that will wrap up a five-game home stand to start the season.
