Elmira Jackals News Release

Week 7 Game Results:

12/2/05 Kalamazoo 7 @ Elmira 6

Elmira, NY - After leading 3-1 early in the 2nd period, the Elmira Jackals almost came back from a 4-goal deficit, falling 7-6 to the Kalamazoo Wings Friday night at the First Arena.

Elmira struck first tonight when Kevin Cooper lifted a back hand shot up under the cross bar for a 1-0 lead at 10:30, assisted by John Donnelly and Chris Chaput. Tyler Willis tied the game at 15:22, but Elmira would take the lead again two minutes later. Sam Paolini scored his 6th goal of the season at 17:21 from Chaput and Carl Drakensjo for a 2-1 Elmira advantage after twenty minutes.

In the second period it didn't take long for the Jackals to extend their lead. Cooper scored his second goal of the game, a power play goal at 2:55 from Jarrett Konkle and Trevor Burgess for a 3-1 score. But then things turned for the worse. Kalamazoo would scored the next 6 straight goals. Nick Bootland and Joe Seroski scored power play goals 2-minutes apart to tie the game at three. Then Tyler Rennette made it 4-3 at 11:36 and Daniel Carriere's short handed goal put the K-Wings up two goals after forty minutes.

In the third period the Wings scored two more goals to make it 7-3 Kalamazoo. Rennette scored his second of the night at 7:21 and Tim Turner capped off the K-Wings scoring at 10:07. But the Jackals weren't out of it yet. Elmira scored three goals within the last five minutes of the game to make it interesting. Konkle scored his first of the night at 14:52, a power play goal from Paolini to stop the bleeding. At 18:20 Konkle again scored a power play goal, his second of the night assisted by Chaput and Burgess. Cooper then made things very interesting as he collected his hat trick at 19:17, from Burgess and David Herring, to bring the game back to 7-6 Kalamazoo. With time winding down and the Jackals net empty, Cooper snuck past a K-Wings defender with the puck and found himself on a 2-on-1 with Konkle. Cooper neatly slid the puck across to Konkle, who was robbed by Kalamazoo goaltender Jeff Reynaert at point-blank range with seconds left, leaving the First Arena aching for another minute of action.

Reynaert got the win, stopping 25-of-31 in the game, while Ryan McIntosh was superb in net for the Jackals, making 34 saves on 41 shots in the losing effort.

12/3/05 Elmira 1 @ Richmond 4

Richmond, VA - Despite being tied at one going into the third period and out-shooting the Richmond Riverdogs 36-15 after two periods, the Elmira Jackals fell 4-1 Saturday night at the Richmond Coliseum.

Elmira came out gunning in this game, firing 16 shots on goal in the first twenty minutes. But they could not get the puck past goaltender Doug Groenestege. On the contrary Richmond had just 6 shots on goal in the first period, but they had the lead going into the intermission. Defenseman Dan Vandermeer's slap shot from the high slot found the net a mere 27 seconds into the game (Richmond's first shot of the night).

In the second period Elmira continued to pour on the attack. The Jackals out-shot the Riverdogs 20-9 in the middle frame and worked themselves back to even close to the 8-minute mark. Jackals leading scorer Jarrett Konkle scored an unassisted, short handed goal at 7:58 to tie the game at one. Konkle stole the puck in the neutral zone while on the penalty kill, skated down the left wing and clanged his shot off the rear-support bar in the top shelf of the net.

The third period was a complete digression from how the first forty minutes were played. Richmond out-shot Elmira 16-7 in the final frame, scoring three times to grab the two points. Dan Vandermeer scored his second of the game at 8:10 to regain the Riverdogs lead. Two minutes later his brother Bill Vandermeer made it 3-1 Richmond with a goal at 10:04. Dennis Mullin capped off the night with an empty net goal at 19:02 to complete the third period rout.

Richmond goaltender Doug Groenestege was outstanding in goal, stopping 42-of-43 shots for the win and the first star honors. Elmira's Nick Boucher made 27 saves on 30 shots in the loss. Both teams struggled on the power play, Richmond was 0-for-9, while Elmira was 0-for-4 in the game.
