Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - January 10, 2014 - Following last Saturday's overtime win against Wheeling the Elmira Jackals could not string together consecutive victories thanks to a 4-1 defeat to the Reading Royals on Friday night at First Arena. The loss dropped Elmira's record to 10-17-4 on the season.

Coming off of a 6-2 win on Wednesday night against Wheeling, the Royals played an energized first period and took a 2-0 lead for their efforts. Aaron Gens converted a Jackals turnover for the first goal of the game at 11:56 of the first period. The unassisted strike was Gens' fourth of the year. Julien Cayer followed 51 seconds later with a slap shot from the high slot that squeezed through the pads of Elmira goalie Scott Greenham for a 2-0 advantage. Reading's defense limited Elmira to just two shots in the period, and that was Elmira's lowest shot output in a first period this season. Greenham, meanwhile, turned away eight of Reading's 10 shots.

The Royals used another quick burst of offense early in the second to double their lead. It only took 88 until Domenic Monardo tipped a Michal Cajkovsky point shot past Greenham for his 11th score and a 3-0 Reading advantage. Thirty nine seconds later Ethan Cox deflected a Monardo wrist shot over Greenham's glove hand and ended the Jackals goaltender's night. Maxime Clermont came on in relief for his first game action since his start on New Year's Eve in South Carolina. He thwarted each of the five shots he saw and kept the Royals from building their lead any further. The Jackals had a pair of power play opportunities near the midway point of the frame but were unable to convert and headed into the third trailing by four.

The Jackals had a difficult time building momentum in the third against a Reading defense that was intent on helping goalie Brandon Anderson pick up his second shutout of the season. The Jackals were able to breakthrough late in the frame, though, when they forced Anderson into a puckhandling mistake behind his own net. After Patch Alber rimmed the puck deep, Jordan Pietrus took the puck away from Anderson in the trapezoid and hit Dane Walters with a pass in the right win circle. Walters hit the open net for his second goal of the season with 3:27 remaining. That was all the offense the Jackals would receive, though.

Greenham took the loss with 10 saves on 14 shots, while Clermont was 14-for-14 in relief. Elmira went 0-for-3 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.
