Atlanta Gladiators News Release

DULUTH, Ga. - Winners of six of their last eight, and on a three game winning streak for the second time in three weeks, the Gwinnett Gladiators were sailing high coming into Friday's matchup with the Orlando Solar Bears, but the visitors stunted Gwinnett's momentum as Orlando won, 5-1 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Jacob Cepis led all scorers with a three-point night.

The Solar Bears opened up the scoring with their third shorthanded goal of the season at 6:18. Blake Kessel intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and passed it off to a streaking Andrew Johnston the opposite way, who buried it on the breakaway. At 12:09, Scott Tanski doubled up the score, receiving a slick pass in the far faceoff circle from Cepis in the nearside half-boards.

One minute later, Marshall Everson, playing for the first time in 10 games after coming off the injured reserve, one-timed a loose puck in the slot. Capping off a wild two minutes, Kory Nagy lucked into a wild ricochet off the stanchion off the dump in from Bryce Aneloski and one-timed the puck in at 14:12.

The second period favored the visitors as well with the Solar Bears outshooting the Gladiators, 15-to-7. Orlando also scored the lone goal of the period as Eric Baier ringed in his fourth of the season from Cepis at 3:40. That goal made it 4-1 Orlando, and it also knocked out Gwinnett starter Paul Karpowich, who saved nine of the 13 shots he faced in nearly 24 minutes of action. In his stead, Brad Phillips was a perfect 14-for-14 in the second.

Orlando scored the lone goal of the third, and their only against Phillips at 3:54 from Mike Ullrich on the power play. That snapped a Gwinnett streak of 17 straight penalties killed, all within 2014. Phillips was nearly perfect in relief, making 28 saves on 29 shots against, while Christopher Gibson stopped 17-of-18 in his own return back to Orlando after being reassigned from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL yesterday.

The two squads will face each other again Saturday night at 7:05 for the first $5 Frenzy of the season. Make sure to show up early to get your Gladiators fleece blanket for only five dollars. To purchase tickets, please visit www.gwinnettgladiators.com or call the front office at 707-497-5100.

The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
