Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 13 Game Results:
1/7/05 Jackals 6 - Richmond 3
Elmira, NY - The Elmira Jackals won their third straight game Friday night as they trounced the Richmond Riverdogs 6-3 at the First Arena.
Elmira got their leading scorer Greg Koehler back from a rib injury and it didn't take Koehler long to start raking in the points. The Scarborough, Ontario native rifled the biscuit into the net just 21 seconds into the game, assisted by Derek Campbell and Jamie Thompson to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead. Richmond struck back with a power play goal at 8:28 by David Brosseau to level the score. Elmira regained the lead with a man-advantage goal of their own as defenseman Corey Foster one-timed a shot past goalie Ryan McIntosh at 11:41 assisted by Koehler and Jason Sessa.
But the depleted Riverdogs, who only dressed 15 players, including two goaltenders, would not go away. Jonathan Gagnon tied the game at two with a goal at 4:17 from David Brosseau and then grabbed their only lead of the night, 3-2, when Darren Wetherill scored his first goal of the year from Gagnon at 12:13. Elmira retaliated at 16:19 when rookie Derek Campbell banked a shot off a Richmond defenseman and past McIntosh to tie game at three; Koehler and Trevor Burgess received assists.
Although Richmond was able to keep up with the Jackals for the first 40 minutes, the final session was a totally different story as fatigue began to play its role on the visitors. Elmira regained the lead 4-3 on a Jamie Thompson goal, his 12th of the year, at 6:02 from Sessa and Koehler. 26 seconds later Darren Van Oene scorched a wrist shot right between the legs of McIntosh to make it a two-goal lead. Thompson would put the icing on the cake at 17:03 with his second goal of the night, a power play goal assisted by Koehler and Sessa; all five Jackals touched the puck in the passing exchange that led to the Thompson tap-in goal.
Greg Hewitt earned his 14th win of the season by turning aside 28-of-31 for the Jackals, while Ryan McIntosh took the loss, making 31 saves on 37 Elmira shots on goal.
1/8/05 Muskegon 5 - Jackals 0
Elmira, NY - The Muskegon Fury scored five times and shut out the Elmira Jackals Saturday night for a 5-0 win in a rematch of last year's Colonial Cup Finals at the First Arena.
Both teams played a very even first period, but at 14:17 on the power play, Jason Lawmaster slap shot from the red line ricocheted off the glass near the visitors' entrance into the empty Elmira net, vacated by goalie Greg Hewitt who was attempted to catch the puck behind the goal.
The second period was a different story. The Fury turned on the pressure and began the pick away at the Jackals, slowly and steadily increasing their lead. B.J. Gaustad, Kevin Haupt and Jeff Nelson all scored to extend Muskegon's lead to 4-0.
In the final period Gaustad scored just 23 seconds into the period on rookie goalie Kevin Kurk, who replaced Hewitt to start the period, the score was now and finished 5-0.
Brent Belecki earned his first shutout of the year by stopping all 24 Jackals shots on goal; Greg Hewitt took the loss, stopping 18-of-22 in 40 minutes of play; Kevin Kurk stopped 10-11 while playing the final period.
1/9/05 Richmond 1 - Jackals 0 (2-1 in Shootout)
Richmond, VA - The Elmira Jackals earned a point Sunday with a 1-0 shootout loss to the Richmond Riverdogs at the Richmond Coliseum.
Making his debut start with the Riverdogs, goaltender Nathan Grobins, who spent the 2004-2005 training camp in Elmira, made 29 saves to hold the Jackals forwards at bay. Elmira out-shot Richmond in each period and by a 29-19 total in the game, but both Grobins and Greg
Hewitt earned regulation shutouts with their performances Sunday.
In the shootout Jason Sessa scored to lead off round one, but then Grobins shut down Elmira and Richmond got goals from David Brosseau and Mark Turner to earn the extra point.
Notes: Both teams were 0-for-6 on the power play in the game. Greg Koehler and Francis Belanger dropped the gloves 22 seconds into the contest. Alex Andreyev received a game misconduct at 10:42 for the first period for dropping the gloves and going after Belanger, who looked ready to fight but did not reciprocate. Elmira had 34 penalty minutes in the game, Richmond had 21. Grobins had a shootout win in his only other UHL game this season, appearing for Fort Wayne last month. Grobins made his best save of the night in the closing seconds of the third period, flashing his catching glove to rob Greg Koehler on what looked to be the game stealing play. The start of the game was delayed 15 minutes due to Richmond arriving at 3 pm, bus problems on route from Adirondack were cited.
