Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers started the weekend with loads of excitement after a 5-1 win over Greenville on Friday. However, things turned sour on Saturday and Sunday, as the Elmira Jackals swept a two-game set from the Nailers at WesBanco Arena. On Sunday, Kyle Stroh snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period, and Allan McPherson added insurance in the third for a 3-1 win. CJ Motte stopped 29 of 30 shots between the pipes.
Both teams lit the lamp during the opening stanza, with the Jackals scoring first, followed by an answer from the Nailers. The Elmira tally came just 2:16 into play, when Tyler Currier dribbled the puck into the slot for Matt Garbowsky, who stepped up and swatted a shot into the right side of the net. Wheeling's response came with 9:10 left, following a solid cycle of the puck in the offensive zone. Connor Leen ended up connecting with Matt Tabrum, whose left circle wrist shot flew into the top-right corner of the cage. Chris Ciotti also picked up an assist on the equalizer.
One goal was scored in the middle frame, and it came with 2:56 remaining, as the Jackals regained their advantage. A scramble for a loose puck took place in the low slot. The battle resulted in Kyle Stroh fishing the biscuit out of the pile, and lifting a shot up and into the goal. Mike Seidel and Zach Cohen had the assists. Elmira oushot Wheeling 14-7 in the second period, after a 13-12 edge for the Nailers in the first.
The deficit remained one until the last three minutes of the third period, when the Jackals added a backbreaking insurance marker for a 3-1 final score. Allan McPherson worked his way to the bottom of the left circle, where he roofed a shot just underneath the crossbar. The helpers came from Cason Hohmann and Kevin Clare.
CJ Motte stood tall in net for Elmira, making 29 saves on 30 shots for the victory. Franky Palazzese suffered the loss for Wheeling, despite stopping 27 of the 30 shots he faced.
The Nailers will travel to Reading for a pair of games against the Royals on Friday and Saturday at 7:00. Wheeling will then return for four games in six days on March 8th, 11th, 12th, and 13th. The highlight game of those four is Duck Dynasty Night on Saturday the 12th, starring Si Robertson. Pucks and Pups also takes place that weekend on Sunday the 13th, as fans can bring their dogs to the game.
