Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - A three run, eighth inning rally proved to be the difference for the Lansing Lugnuts Sunday afternoon, as they picked up a 4-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers before 1,607 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Justin Jackson ripped a triple into right-center field that scored Wes Stone from first base, putting Lansing ahead 2-1. After Kevin Ahrens was intentionally walked, Matt Liuzza lined a double into the gap that plated both runners to make it a 4-1 game.
Lansing trailed 1-0 in the sixth when Stone and Jackson smacked back-to-back doubles to tie the game at 1-1. Jackson finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and fell just a homer short of the cycle.
The game was a pitchers duel through the first seven frames as the Lugnuts' Randy Boone and the Snappers' Brian Kirwan went pitch-for-pitch, but neither man would factor in the decision.
Boone lasted seven innings and allowed just an unearned run while scattering six hits and striking out four batters. The only run that scored against him came home in the fourth inning when Ben Revere scored from third base on a Kevin Ahrens' error that gave Beloit a 1-0 lead.
Kirwan went six innings for the Snappers and surrendered one run on four hits.
Instead Edgar Estanga (3-0) got the win for the Lugnuts in relief by tossing the final two frames without allowing a run.
Bradley Tippett (1-1) took the loss for Beloit after surrendering all three runs in the eighth to Lansing.
Lansing (16-13) and Beloit (12-18) will play the second game of the series on Monday night at Oldsmobile Park. Trystan Magnuson (0-3, 5.87) will take the mound for the Lugnuts, while Santos Arias (0-0, 0.00) will pitch for the Snappers. The Lugnuts will also be celebrating Cinco de Mayo Monday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
