West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Alfredo Figaro threw a complete game, three-hit shutout as the Whitecaps defeated Quad Cities, 4-0 to take two of three in the series.
It was the first complete game shutout thrown by a Whitecap since Jonah Nickerson tossed a two-hitter at Cedar Rapids on July 28, 2007.
Figaro threw 110 pitches and gave up lead off singles to Mike Folli in both the first and ninth innings. Matthew Arburr touched Figaro for a lead off hit in the eighth. The only other River Bandits runner to reach base was Luis De La Cruz, who struck out to lead off the third but reached on a wild pitch.
Between the wild pitch on the strikeout and Arburr's hit, Figaro retired 15 batters in a row.
West Michigan took the lead in the first inning when Roger Tomas scored on a ground out by Chris Carlson. It was the first day in the lineup for Tomas since April 25 and he went 2-for-4.
Carlson tripled in the fourth inning to stretch his hitting streak to eight games. Casper Wells drove home Carlson with a single to center field, which made the score 2-0.
Mark McBratney tripled in the fifth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Peter. In the seventh, Ronnie Bourquin led off with a double and came home on a single by Joe Bowen.
Kody Kaiser's seven game hit streak came to an end for West Michigan.
At 1 hour, 59 minutes, it was the fastest game of the season for the Whitecaps, who improved to 9-3 at home.
West Michigan did not commit an error in the three game series and has erred just once in the four games since matching a team record with eight errors on Tuesday at Wisconsin.
