Peoria Chiefs News Release
South Bend, IN - The Peoria Chiefs were shutout 2-0 Sunday afternoon by three pitchers, including Jarrod Parker, the top ranked prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. The loss to the Silver Hawks drops Peoria to 10-19 on the season and 1-2 on their 10-game roadtrip.
For the first time in the series, South Bend scored first as the home team picked up a run in the second. With one out, Derrick Walker doubled off Chiefs hurler Hung-Wen Chen and scored on a basehit by Ramon Ramirez. Chen retired the next two batters to keep the Chiefs down 1-0.
South Bend added to their lead in the fifth against Chen. Evan Frey led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a hit by Taylor Harbin. Chen walked Mike Mee to load the bases and Sean Coughlin made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly. With runners on second and third, Chen got Clayton Connor to pop up on the infield and Walker flew out to end the inning.
Peoria finally rallied against Parker in the sixth but came up empty. Nate Samson led off with an infield single and moved to third on a one-out hit by Kyler Burke. Marquez Smith just missed a three-run homer down the left-field line but the ball hooked foul and he eventually struck out. Parker then got Dylan Johnston on a broken-bat line out to end the inning. The Chiefs didn't have any base runners over the final three innings as South Bend retired the last 11 batters.
Chen (0-1) allowed two runs on a career-high seven hits in five innings of work. He also walked two, hit one and struck out two. Zach Ashwood struck out four in three innings of relief work and allowed just one batter.
Parker (2-1), the ninth overall selection in last June's draft, tied a career high with six strikeouts over a career-high six innings. He allowed just four hits, two of which didn't leave the infield. Tom Layne retired all six batters he faced over two innings with a pair of strikeouts. Evan Scribner picked up his second save as he struck out the side in the ninth.
