Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
MIDLAND, MI -- Wisconsin Timber Rattler Joe Dunigan went 4-for-4. Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez struck out nine batters in his second start in a row. But, it was the Great Lakes Loons who came away with the 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. Preston Mattingly drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ramirez issued a lead-off walk to Brian Matthews in the bottom of the second. Travis Vetters followed with an RBI double and took third on the throw to the plate. But, Ramirez would only allow that one run in the inning.
Wisconsin (10-16) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Juan Diaz singled with two gone to get on base. Dunigan followed with a double off the centerfield wall and Diaz scored to even the game 1-1.
Mattingly singled to start the bottom of the fifth inning and stole second. He went to third on a two-out infield single by Erik Kanaby. Kanaby broke for second before Ramirez delivered an 0-1 pitch to Jovanny Rosario at the plate. Ramirez stepped off the rubber and ran at Kanaby to catch the speedster in the rundown. But, Mattingly broke for the plate as the rundown started and he scored the go ahead run before the third out of the inning could be recorded.
Dunigan delivered again for the in the top of the seventh inning to put together a game-tying rally. He led off the frame with a single. Maximo Mendez drew a one out walk. Then, Edilio Colina singled to right with the runners moving on a 3-2 pitch. Dunigan scored and Colina moved his hitting streak to 14 games on that single.
But, the Loons (13-16) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Vetters singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mattingly singled Vetters home for a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Mattingly tried to score on a grounder to first baseman Joe White. Mattingly was ruled safe on a close play and the Loons went up 4-2.
In the top of the eighth inning, White lead off with single. Dunigan collected his fourth hit of the day, a double to center with two outs, to put the tying runs in scoring position. But, Bobby Blevins got the final out of the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
Ramirez allowed four runs on seven hits over his 6-1/3 innings and walked only one to go along with his nine strikeouts, but he would be tagged with the loss.
Game two of the series is Monday night at Dow Diamond. Edward Paredes (1-2, 7.13) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Steven Johnson (2-1, 255) will head to the hill for the Loons. Game time is 6:05pm CDT.
