ERIE, Pa. - For the second straight night, the Bowie Baysox carried a lead into the bottom of the eighth inning before falling to the SeaWolves 7-5 Friday night in Erie. With the loss, the Baysox fall to 71-60, 4.0 games behind the Harrisburg Senators for first place in the Western Division, and 1.5 games in front of the Richmond Flying Squirrels for the final playoff position in the division.

Baysox first baseman Joe Mahoney led the way offensively for Bowie, going 2-4 with a double, a home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Left fielder LJ Hoes and designated hitter Aaron Baker each contributed a pair of hits in the contest.

Erie started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Bryan Pounds led off with a single to left field before Deik Scram and Bryan Holaday each walked to load the bases with nobody out. Baysox starter Tim Bascom struck out Cale Iorg for the first out of the inning before Brent Wyatt grounded into a fielder's choice. Holaday was retired at second base, but Pounds scored on the play to put Erie in front 1-0. Bascom escaped further damage when Shawn Roof flew out to end the inning.

Bowie answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Pedro Florimon led off with a single to left field and stole second base with one out and right fielder Buck Britton batting. Britton drove Florimon in with a double to right field and advanced to third base when center fielder Xavier Avery grounded out. Second baseman Greg Miclat drove in the second run of the inning with a single to left field and Hoes reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second with the Baysox leading 2-1, before Hoes was picked off at first base to end the inning.

The lead was short-lived as Erie tied the game with another run in the bottom of the third inning. Brandon Douglas hit a one-out double to left field and scored when Pounds hit a two-out single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.

The Baysox took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mahoney led off with a double to center field and third baseman Brandon Waring followed with a RBI double to right field. Waring advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Caleb Joseph and scored on a wild pitch with designated hitter Aaron Baker batting. Baker struck out and Britton flew out to end the inning with Bowie leading 4-2.

Mahoney led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field to extend Bowie's lead to 5-2. It was Mahoney's 10th home run of the season, and his first August 6.

After holding the SeaWolves to two runs over 6.0 innings, Bascom gave way to Pasadena native Chorye Spoone on the mound. The right-hander retired Erie in order in the bottom of the seventh inning before the Baysox collapsed in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Spoone walked Jaime Johnson and Douglas to open the frame and Bishop singled to left field to load the bases with no outs. Pounds hit a ground ball to shortstop and was retired at first base as Johnson scored the first run of the inning. Left-hander Pedro Viola relieved Spoone and hit Deik Scram to load the bases again with one out. Holaday hit a soft ground ball towards the mound that Viola deflected to third base, as Holaday reached first base with an infield single and Douglas scored the second run of the inning.

With Bowie still clinging to a one run lead, closer Jose Diaz relieved Viola. Diaz hit Michael Rockett with a pitch to force in the tying run and Wyatt singled to right field to give Erie a one-run lead. With still only one out in the inning, Roof attempted a squeeze bunt, but Diaz fielded the ball and threw Holaday out at home for the second out of the inning. Batting for the second time in the inning, Johnson hit a ground ball to first base, and beat Diaz to first base for an infield single as Rockett scored from third. Wyatt attempted to score from second base on the play, and was thrown out at home to end the inning with Erie leading 7-5.

The Baysox were retired in order in the top of the ninth inning to seal the loss. Bascom did not record a decision after holding Erie to two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five batters in 6.0 innings. Spoone earned a hold after allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings. Viola was charged with the loss (3-2) after allowing two runs without recording an out and Diaz was charged with his third blown save of the season after allowing two hits in 0.2 innings.
