Altoona Curve News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Collin McHugh (7-2) mystified Curve hitters for six innings while Juan Lagares had a pair of RBIs to help the Binghamton Mets down the Curve, 3-1, on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Matt Curry drove in Altoona's lone run in the loss with his sixth home run of the year in the seventh.
The B-Mets opened the scoring off starter Mike Colla (5-10) in the fifth with two down when they sparked a two-out rally. Reese Havens singled with two away off the Curve righty and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Lagares followed with an RBI double to right and Binghamton had the lead, 1-0.
Altoona squandered a pristine opportunity to tie the game off McHugh in the sixth when the right hander hit Starling Marte to start the inning. With the speedster on first, McHugh's throw on a pickoff attempt was wide and Marte sprinted all the way to third.
With the tying run at third and no one out, McHugh struck out Brock Holt, walked Jeremy Farrell, struck out Andrew Lambo and induced an inning-ending fly out by Tony Sanchez to wiggle out of the tight spot.
That momentum carried over to the bottom of the sixth when rehabbing New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes homered to lead off the frame against Colla. Matt den Dekker then placed a hustle double on the board as he blooped a ball down the left-field line that he legged out for a double. Lagares singled in den Dekker two batters later for the inning's second run.
The Lagares single ended Colla's night as the right hander finished 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Colla had not allowed a run against Binghamton in his previous two starts before tonight. Tim Alderson pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief with four strikeouts behind Colla to keep the game close.
Curry's home run to lead off the seventh was off Jack Egbert, who went on to finish the game for his fifth save of the season.
The third game of the four-game series will take place on Saturday night as Altoona (60-72) and Binghamton (60-72) meet up at 7:05 p.m. from NYSEG Stadium. RHP Brett Sinkbeil (0-0, 2.25) makes his first road start for Altoona on Saturday evening while RHP Tobi Stoner (4-5, 5.31) starts for the B-Mets.
Airtime is set for 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
