Last Game

Toronto FC 3, Earthquakes 1; July 11, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif.

Two goals from Chad Barrett paced Toronto FC to a rare road win, 3-1 against the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. Barrett opened the scoring in the fifth minute before capping off a strong offensive night by scoring another goal in the 69th to give Toronto their second road victory of the season. In the fifth minute, Toronto got on the scoreboard. Barrett took a pass from Dwayne De Rosario inside the box, and from the right side fired a low shot that beat Cannon cleanly inside the left post. Barrett almost scored again a minute later. From the left wing, Brennan's cross found Barrett charging up the middle, but Barrett's open header from six yards out but missed wide right. San Jose started to come alive as the game approached the half-hour mark. In the 27th minute, a deflected ball popped high in the air 10 yards from goal. Ryan Johnson positioned himself well to block on-rushing goalkeeper Stefan Frei from the ball, and attempted a bicycle kick that was cleared off the line by Carl Robinson. Two minutes later, Elliott pounced on a loose ball and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that Frei did well to parry over the crossbar. In the 32nd minute, San Jose tied the game. Johnson ran down a long ball from Arturo Alvarez inside the penalty area, and held off a pair of defenders before laying it off to an open Darren Huckerby. From 15 yards, Huckerby slotted the ball home with his left foot, beating Frei inside the left post. Toronto regained the lead early in the second half after playing a series of passes in the air inside the San Jose penalty area. In the 54th minute, Barrett's header reached Nana Attakora for a header 12 yards from goal that was in turn headed into the net by Vitti from eight yards out, beating a flat-footed Cannon inside the left post. Cornell Glen came on for Campos in the 59th minute as San Jose looked to reignite their offense. A minute later, Glen took a pass on the right wing and cut toward the corner of the penalty area, unleashing a shot that curled just wide of the far post. Toronto scored their third goal in the 69th minute. A De Rosario long ball out of the back looked like it was going to be played by Pitchkolan in midfield, but the San Jose defender fell to the turf injured, allowing Barrett to collect the ball and walk in alone on goal. Cannon came out to challenge Barrett near the top of the penalty area, but Barrett dribbled around him and tapped it into the empty net.

Last Game vs. Chicago

Earthquakes 3, Chicago Fire 3; April 11, 2009; Buck Shaw Stadium: Santa Clara, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes and the Chicago Fire played to a 3-3 draw. The home side took the lead on three different occasions, only to see the Fire come back each time, with Chris Rolfe's strike with five minutes remaining giving the visitors the last word. San Jose goals from Ryan Johnson and Bobby Convey, sandwiched around Marco Pappa's effort put the home side 2-1 up at halftime. Chicago equalized yet again through Brian McBride, only to see Arturo Alvarez's 75th-minute penalty give the Quakes the lead. But the ejection of San Jose's Shea Salinas for two bookable offenses breathed new life into the visitors, and the Fire made the Quakes pay courtesy of Rolfe's heroics, keeping Chicago unbeaten on the 2009 season. For the first goal, defender Chris Leitch's inch-perfect 50-yard pass found Darren Huckerby in stride on the left, with the Englishman's exquisite first touch leaving Brandon Prideaux in his wake. Huckerby's low centering feed was then scrambled over the line by Johnson for his second goal of the season. The Fire secured an equalizer in the 41st minute. A pass to Logan Pause caught the Quakes defense over-shifted, and his slide-rule pass found a wide-open Pappa, who fired his shot past Joe Cannon in the San Jose goal. But no sooner had Chicago finished celebrating when San Jose reclaimed the lead. Convey pounced on a loose ball in the attacking half, and after evading two Fire defenders, slotted his shot under Busch to make the score 2-1 in favor of the home side. Chicago head coach Denis Hamlett brought on Cuauhtémoc Blanco to start the second half, and this change seemed to benefit Chicago as they capped off a spell of sustained pressure with a brilliant strike from McBride in the 56th minute. A long pass was headed by Blanco towards McBride, and his deft takedown and quick turn saw him deposit his shot past Cannon. That is until the 74th minute when a ball over the top saw Convey get on the wrong side of Robinson and then was bundled over by the Chicago defender. Alvarez easily dispatched the spot kick to give the home side the lead for the third time in the match. San Jose were then forced to play with 10 men when Salinas earned his second yellow card of the match for delaying a restart in the 81st minute, and Chicago quickly made the man advantage pay off, with Rolfe's bullet shot from distance giving the Fire a share of the points. The Quakes remain at home next weekend, making the trek to Oakland where they will take on the LA Galaxy at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in the first game between the in-state rivals this season.
