TEAM NOTES
BECKHAM AND BIRCHALL READY TO GO: The Galaxy will be looking to add to players to their active roster this week with the re-opening of the transfer window on Wednesday. That day, the club will be looking to acquire the International Transfer Certificates for both David Beckham and Chris Birchall. Once the players receive their ITC's they can officially be added to the Galaxy roster. LA will not need to make any roster moves in order to add the players to the active roster, as both Sean Franklin and Julian Valentin are on the Disabled List, freeing up their roster spots for Beckham and Birchall.
BUDDLE SET FOR 200: Edson Buddle, who scored the Galaxy's only goal in the win over Chivas USA on Saturday night, is in line to play the 200th game of his MLS career this weekend against New York. Born and raised in New York, Buddle has scored 71 goals in his 199 career games, including three goals this season, placing him in a tie for second on the Galaxy this season. Buddle, who scored six goals in 28 games with the Red Bulls in 2006, has scored two of the Galaxy's five game-winning goals this season and now has 19 in his career, including seven in 55 games with the Galaxy. If Buddle plays on Thursday, he will become the 49th player in league history to play in 200 or more games.
BUDDLE HEADER UP FOR GOAL OF THE WEEK: Buddle's header from about 13 yards out on has been nominated for the MLS Goal of the Week award. Buddle has won the award four times since the start of the 2005 season, including once with the Galaxy late in the 2007. An MLS All-Star for the first time in 2008, Buddle has three goals this season in 12 games for the Galaxy.
GUNNING FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT: The LA Galaxy go in search of their fourth straight win on Thursday, when they travel east to take on the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium. The Galaxy enter the game on a three-game winning streak, having beaten Houston, New England and Chivas USA over the last three weeks.
Additionally, the Galaxy have kept a clean sheet in all three wins, marking the first time since the 2006 season that they have kept three consecutive clean sheets.
The last time the Galaxy won four straight games was in the 2007 season when LA beat Kansas City (9/27), Columbus (9/30), Houston (10/7) and Toronto FC (10/13) as part of a five-game winning streak late in the 2007 campaign.
SAUNDERS KEEPS IT CLEAN AGAIN: Starting in place of Donovan Ricketts once again, Josh Saunders kept his second straight clean sheet on Saturday night, making two saves in the 1-0 win over Chivas USA. With his second straight shutout, Saunders becomes the first Galaxy goalkeeper since Kevin Hartman on July 8 and 15, 2006 to record consecutive shutouts.
Including the friendly win over CS Herediano on June 9, Saunders has now played three consecutive games without allowing a goal. He is now 2-1-1 with a 1.25 goals against average this season.
RICKETTS TO RETURN: Despite helping Jamaica to a third place finish in Group A at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Donovan Ricketts was not able to get the Reggae Boyz through to the knockout stages of the competition and will re-join the Galaxy this week. Ricketts played the full 90 minutes in all three of Jamaica's games, allowing just two goals and keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over El Salvador on Friday. Only Mexico allowed fewer goals than Jamaica, but with just one goal scored and three points, Jamaica was the lone third place team not to advance to the quarterfinals.
MARSHALL GOES BACK TO AUSTIN: After returning to Los Angeles last week to receive treatment for back spasms, rookie defender Yohance Marshall re-joined the Austin Aztex of the USL-1 on loan last weekend. Marshall started in central defense and played the full 90 minutes in Austin's 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers. Marshall is expected to be back in action with the Aztex this weekend when they travel to Minnesota to take on the Thunder.
YOUTH ACADEMY
GALAXY U-20's SEASON ENDS WITH DEFEAT: The LA Galaxy U-20 team saw their season come to an end on Friday night with a 3-2 loss to Chivas USA. With the loss, the Galaxy finish the season with a 7-3-0 record for 21 points, leaving them three points behind Chivas USA, who won the group with an 8-2-0 record.
This was the second year that the Galaxy had participated in the USL Super-20 League, finishing first in the Pacific Southern California Division last season. In their two years of competing in the league, the Galaxy have a 14-5-1 record and have outscored opponents 67-18 with only one of their five loses coming by more than a single goal.
