ARNAUD, ESPINOZA SCORE IN GOLD CUP PLAY:
The Kansas City Wizards had players appear in all three games of an exciting soccer tripleheader at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Saturday night. After the Wizards tied the New England Revolution 0-0 in the first match of the set, Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad and midfielder/forward Davy Arnaud started for the United States in a comeback 2-2 tie against Haiti. Midfielder Roger Espinoza then started for Honduras in a 4-0 win over Grenada. Both Arnaud and Espinoza scored goals on the night. Espinoza was voted Miller Lite Man of the Match by media members for his performance. Both the United States and Honduras play Saturday night in quarterfinal matches. Honduras faces Canada at 4 p.m. CT, while the United States takes on Panama at 7 p.m. CT. The U.S. match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel and TelaFutura.
Conrad served as captain of the U.S. National Team and recorded his 25th international cap on the night. Arnaud appeared for the 4th time in his international career, and scored his 1st international goal. Arnaud took a pass from Houston Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden in behind the Haiti defense in the 6th minute. Arnaud shielded off a defender and calmly slid the ball under the Haitian goalkeeper from the top of the 18 for an early 1-0 U.S. lead.
After falling behind to Haiti, the United States equalized in the 1st minute of second-half stoppage time through a beautiful long-range bomb off the foot of Holden. The Houston player was voted Miller Lite Man of the Match for his performance.
In the final match of the day, Honduras rolled over Grenada 4-0. Wizards midfielder Roger Espinoza started and played 90 minutes in his 7th international match, all of which have come in 2009. Espinoza was voted Miller Lite Man of the Match by media members for his outstanding performance Saturday. Espinoza started all three group-stage matches for Honduras, who qualified for the knockout round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup by finishing in 2nd place in the group behind the United States. Espinoza converted his 2nd international goal in the 26th minute, nodding home a cross from Allan Lalin to put Los Catrachos ahead 2-0 at the time.
