San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed midfielder Will Richmond to a Homegrown Player contract for the 2022 season with club options through 2025. He becomes the ninth product of the Quakes Academy to sign with the first team and eighth since December 2016.
"Will is a player we've kept our eye on for several years and we're happy with the strides he's made in college," said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. "We're confident he would have been selected very early in the upcoming MLS SuperDraft and we're excited to help him transition to the pro game in 2022."
Richmond, 21, joins the Quakes after four years with the Stanford Cardinal where he tallied 11 goals and 11 assists in 72 appearances (49 starts). His best season came in 2020 when he ranked top-10 in the Pac-12 Conference in both goals (5, t-8th) and assists (6, t-3rd), led the Cardinal to a conference championship, and earned All-Pac-12 First Team and Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll accolades.
Richmond departs Stanford as a two-time Pac-12 champion (2018, 2020) and helped the Cardinal finish third place nationally in 2019. He earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors in 2020 and All-Pac-12 Second Team honors in 2021. He was also a two-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll recipient (2019, 2020). Richmond played alongside current Quakes defender Tanner Beason for two seasons (2018-19).
Prior to Stanford, Richmond competed for the Quakes Academy from 2016 to 2018 and was named to the 2017 Generation adidas Cup Best XI. He also previously competed for De Anza Force Soccer Club (2015-16) and Ballistic United Soccer Club (2014-15).
Richmond, who was born in San Francisco, attended Piedmont High School in Piedmont, Calif. and was part of the school's Honors Society from 2015-17.
