Earthquakes Weekly Update: January 10, 2022

Over the past week, the San Jose Earthquakes announced a pair of signings ahead of the 2022 MLS season. The club today announced the signing of former Stanford midfielder Will Richmond to a Homegrown Player contract, becoming the ninth Homegrown signing in club history. Last Thursday, the club signed Slovakian midfielder Jan Gregus after selecting him with the seventh pick in Stage 2 of the 2021 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft in December.

Last week, defender Marcos Lopez (Peru) and midfielder Jackson Yueill (U.S.) were both called to their respective national team January camps. Both camps will serve as an opportunity for players to build match readiness and compete for roster spots in preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Earthquakes will be participating in MLS SuperDraft 2022 presented by adidas on Tuesday, Jan. 11, beginning at 12 p.m. PT. The Quakes currently hold four total picks (8, 36, 64, and 89) in the three-round event. For more information, click here.

Earthquakes Sign Midfielder Will Richmond to Homegrown Player Contract

Richmond, 21, joins the Quakes after four years with the Stanford Cardinal where he tallied 11 goals and 11 assists in 72 appearances (49 starts). He departs Stanford as a two-time Pac-12 champion (2018, 2020) and helped the Cardinal finish third place nationally in 2019. Richmond competed for the Quakes Academy from 2016 to 2018 after playing for De Anza Force Soccer Club (2015-16) and Ballistic United Soccer Club (2014-15).

Midfielder Jackson Yueill Called to U.S. Men's National Team January Camp

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Jackson Yueill has been called to the U.S. Men's National Team camp by head coach Gregg Berhalter from January 7-21 in Phoenix, Ariz. Yueill, 24, has made 16 prior appearances for the U.S. National Team, most notably helping the Americans win the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and the 2021 Nations League.

Defender Marcos Lopez Called to Peru National Team Camp

San Jose Earthquakes defender Marcos Lopez has been called to a Peru National Team camp from January 4-21 at the VIDENA training complex in Lima, Peru. Lopez, 22, has made 17 prior appearances for the Peru National Team, most recently participating in Peru's 2-1 World Cup Qualifier victory over Venezuela last November.

Jan. 13, 2017 - Earthquakes select Jackson Yueill in 2017 MLS SuperDraft

The Earthquakes selected midfielder Jackson Yueill in the first round (No. 6 overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Yueill has made 116 appearances (103 starts) and tallied seven goals and 10 assists since joining the club in 2017.

Jan. 11, 2019 - Earthquakes select Siad Haji in 2019 MLS SuperDraft

The Earthquakes selected midfielder Siad Haji in the first round (No. 2 overall) of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. Haji has made 12 appearances since joining San Jose in 2019.

ACADEMY UPDATE

Several Quakes Academy players have been called up to participate in U.S. Youth National Team camps this month. Owen Anderson and Rohan Rajagopal were called to the U-15 USYNT camp from Jan. 7-14 in Chula Vista, Calif., while Cruz Medina, Fidel Barajas, Edwyn Mendoza, and Oscar Verhoeven were selected for the U-17 USYNT camp from Jan. 18-25 in Florida.

Additionally, Quakes U17 head coach Dan Degeer is serving as head coach of the U.S. U15s and assistant coach for the U.S. U17s.
