San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez has been named to the 27-player Honduras national team training camp roster in advance of a pair of upcoming friendlies and a two-game start to CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup next month.
Bernardez will join Honduras on May 28 and return on June 13. Los Catrachos will contest two warm-up matches prior to kicking off its qualifying campaign for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Los Catrachos take on New Zealand at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Saturday, May 26, and then have a date with El Salvador at RFK Stadium on Saturday, June 2.
CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers follow on Friday, June 8, at home versus Panama and against Canada at Toronto's BMO Field four days later.
"Victor was in great form for us before his injury. He is now healthy and we hope to see him do well for his country," said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop.
In his first season in MLS, Bernardez started each of the first six games for the Earthquakes and played every minute prior to having to leave the April 14 match with New York at Red Bull Arena through injury in the 44th minute. Diagnosed with an MCL sprain in his left knee, Bernardez has missed the last six games, but trained with the Quakes on Monday after initially having been listed as being out four to six weeks.
"Any time you get a chance to represent your country, it's a big honor," said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle. "I know Victor is excited about the call up and hopefully he does a great job for Honduras."
Bernardez is one of two MLS-based players on Colombian head coach Luis Fernando Suarez's list. He is joined by Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza. Both players will be available on Sunday, May 27, as the Earthquakes are set to take on SKC at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in front of a national television audience (1:30 p.m. PT / NBC Sports Network).
Bernardez, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Thursday, has earned 52 caps for Honduras, and is the only player on the 2012 Earthquakes roster with prior World Cup experience, having played the full 90 minutes of a scoreless draw with Switzerland in his country's final group-stage match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
